Funny smell....

Johnson 140 04

While cruising at 5000 rpm i smelled something burning.
Turned off engine, removed cover and flames were coming out.

Put out flames with water spray.

now engine is dead.

Any ideas what caused this?

very possibly a fuel leak plus the right conditions, you were lucky it wasnt worse. Always a good idea to have a fire extinguisher on board for just such an event.

The fire came from inside the electrical housing, behind the ECU.

isnt all the fuel located on the other side of engine?

Most likely the fire was caused by an electrical short.

i definately would have it look at by an authorized Johnson service center. an possibly a discussion, with the Johnson/Bombadier district manager.
