Am going to change tranny fluid, almost positive(havent checked what dipstick says yet-cant remember) it uses Dexron 3, correct? It's at 95K fluid looks great but what the heck, I'll drain and refill. Gotta check for drain plug in pan, I usually change filters, just havent in this one yet. Any difficulties here? I've serviced all my trannies and no big deal, drain, unbolt pan and filter, replace filter and pangasket, bolt back and refill. Right??? :) I have like 5-6 qts of new Dexron 3 sitting around from a while back, may as well use it and change time as a marker for truck. Thanks, Heinz

I wouldn't even begin to guess the type of fluid as the all seem to call for something different nowadays. It's best to check your owner's manual before you start. I would buy new fluid, too. The old fluid would do for a top-off, but unless it's only a few months old, I'd get some new fluid. Also, there probably isn't a drain plug. Most likely you'll have to loosen all the bolts and drop one corner of the pan to drain. Don't forget to make sure there is a new gasket in the filter box.

My 99 Tahoe uses Dexron III. If its a 4WD i would change the transfer case lube also.
There were some service bulletins out on these trucks for transfer case and rear end lube. You may want to check with your local dealer.
Tranny fluid should be changed before 50k miles...You are way over due.No drain plugs on that tranny either..

If your just dropping the pan your only getting out partial of probably a 12quart fill.
You can flush it out through your cooler lines. It will be a complete drain and refill.

oh I bought it with 75K on it, fluid had to be changed, looks now as good as it was then, no shifting or other probs., yup, I remember the taking off old filter gasket, will make it shift funny if not done, rear diff already done (posi) it's a 2 wd. Hey for now I won't flush, geez I'll use what fluid I have, add more if neccessary and pop filter and gaskets in AND install drain plug, always done that with other trucks too. After maybe 20K, FLUSH and fill with synthetic like motor. I;m thinkin of going to Amsoil for tranny and motor, using 5/30 15K M1 synth. on motor now. Used to use Redline in 175K Jeep, was GREAT oil, no leaks, NO burning etc. Any other probs w/ 99's that anyone knows of besides intake gaskets? Already just changed intank fuel pump, damn expensive! Thanks, Heinz

Naaaaaa I was taking about the "SEAL" up in the valve body for the filter not the pan gasket

I was using M1 but went to Pennzoil Platinum after reading many posts on Oil Analysis being comparable to M1. Save your money and use PP. Why pay over $5 or $6 a quart for M1 when you can get the same for $4 with PP.

I read that Amsoil and Redline excellent group V synthetics.

Actually had a small shop do drain, replace gasket, o ring and filter(was time to change) even though all fluid looked great. Maybe next time I'll go synthetic. Did all for $140 and lubed chassis as well, not too bad I figure.
