I had a recent transmission problem on a front wheel drive car. The original transimisson is automatic, how much time and roughly how much would it cost to put in a used 5 speed. I know you can't say like exactly but like a rough guess, and this would be done professionally.

Re: Transmission

Converting from auto to manual would require all the right donor parts and a ton of time and work to complete. If you were putting together a streetrod or muscle car it might be worth it, but generic every-day transportation isn't worthy of the hassle and expense it would involve.

I'd dump the car now, or repair the auto trans and drive it until the wheels fell off, assuming you have good reason to believe you can drive it for quite a while after the repairs have been made. If you repair it, then sell it, you'd probably do so at a loss.

Re: Transmission

The reason of the transmission failure was because of the dipstick not being fully inserted. The vehicle only has about 86k on it. It is very worth it to me to fix it, possible not putting in the 5 speed but at least replacing the automatic.

Re: Transmission

I was unaware that any manufacturer used the dipstick as a pressure seal. Simple lack of full insertion should not cause failure, IMO. Comments, anyone?

1993 Ford Escort 1.9 Liter No rust at all before I got it it was garaged kept all the time and rarely drove in snow. I just put tires and brakes into it and its my main car. The type of car is dime a dozen. I find then on craigslist for all kinds of low prices in the years I need with problems other then mine. Everything else works on the car except the transmission atm.

Re: Transmission

Considering it is a Ford my money would be on the wrong fluid had been run through the transmission. The older escorts were prone to various problems (keep an eye on the timing belt) and replacing the transmission w/ a used auto would be faster and easier.

Cause of failure couldn't have been due to the fact that the dipstick wasn't fully inserted. Now, if you're talking about the dipstick TUBE not being fully inserted into the transmission housing--I could probably halfway agree with that. Creates a possible entry point for contamination and also a place for fluid to leak.

Re: Transmission

Would it be possible for someone with some mechanical experience do this without a lift?
