I have a 1964 lyncraft 14' boat that i just installed a 2002 johnson 40hp outboard with power trim and tilt but here is my problem i cannot open the motor wide open because it pulls water from underneath my steering tube and shoots it directly in to my boat. do you think a jack plate would prevent this from happening? my transom hieght is only about 16" deep and the motor is a long shaft anywheres between 18 and 19 inches long. any suggestions?

The motor may be too low. That heppened to me when repowering. Raised engine and it took care of the water coming back in the boat.

Yep! Engine is definitely too low. water rises off the water pump bulge in the case and just splashes over the transom. You need to lift it at least 4 inches; Cav plate should be even with bottom of hull.

The vintage and size of your boat suggests that you have a 15" transom (short shaft). It may be that the 40Hp motor as a long shaft (20" shaft). You are therefor dragging a bit. A transom jack or jackplate is the fix (or a shortshaft motor)
