Hi Guys,
Trying to remove the out drive on my 35 year old boat and the port hinge bolt will not come out. Soaked it with 'Liquid Wrench' for a day and a half, heated it with a torch, and then tried to drill into the bolt but it seems like it must be some hard metal, the drills don't cut into it.
Anyone have an idea how to get it out? It's holding up the whole project.
Thanks in advance!!
Jerry

Re: VP270 Hinge bolts

Are you having problem with the hinge pin (#31) or the bolt that holds the hinge pin in (#32)

Hi Don,
It's the bolt that holds the hinge pin in. I've even tried to turn it with a hammer and chisel, it doesn't wanna budge! I know you've worked on a million of these. Ever run into this?
Thanks,
jd

Try tapping on #31 a few times back and forth. Yours is strange. Everyone I have come across the bolt holes are stripped out and the bolts are just sitting in there.:(

I've never had to drill one out like that either. I was always able to get them out. I must be real lucky.

Is it possible to move the engine forward, take out the 6 big bolts and remove the outdrive? The engine.s going to be replaced, but I need to replace the transom and stringer (there's only one) first. The boat is an 18', '72 California with a 302 Ford.

Get the engine out of the boat. It will be in the way for everything else you need to do.
If you need stringers, and a new transom and engine, and the transom sheild is so corroded that you can't remove the bolts. Perhaps you really need to junk the whole boat and find something else. There are few (if any) volvo parts for the old Ford AQ190's still available.
There are too many 18 foot boats out there that work that will be cheaper to buy than what it will cost in materials alone to fix what you have now.

You wont be able to get the ring off that holds the bellhousing to the transom shield. Its behind the outdrive. You got to get the bolt out. Even if you get the motor off the bellhousing the only way to get the bellhousing through the transom is cut a bigger hole in it.

Re: VP270 Hinge bolts

Yo Don, There's only one bad bolt, corrosion on the rest of it is nonexistant, the engine was gratis, and I liked this old boat and want to get it wet again. Don, you go to a lot of trouble to help us guys out, I want you to know that it is appreciated. Thank you.
Not giving up..............yet

Thanks f inscreename. 12 years on the internet and I just found out what the refresh button is for. After looking at the drawing I see I was heating the wrong place. I'll try putting the torch to the underside tomorrow, if that doesn't work maybe I'll get sensible and do like Don says:)
