compression 130 each, good blue spark 3/8" using a timing light spring to block. also great spark, when grounding plugs to block. manually move linkage to start position. spray fuel mix in carb. also a good dose in the cylinders. no sign of firing off. new starter is turning it over plenty fast.

The scenario you describe certainly ought to do something. Plug wires on correct plugs? Plugs any good? Flywheel key sheared? Naw, that should kill the spark. Dang if I know.

A sheared flywheel key doesn't always kill the spark. If the FW slips just a little you can still have spark, but at the wrong time.

Best remaining possibility is failure to scavenge. If that is the problem spraying a bit of fuel mix into the cylinders should get a pop.

Did this engine run for you in the past? Have you done anything at all to it between running okay and not starting?

Need to inspect the reeds, bypass covers and all gaskets associated with the intake and scavenging.

JB, this is the engine i just got from Ohio, for the Duracraft Project. i'll pull the rope starter and see if i can tell it the key is sheared. Just went out and poured fuel mix into the carb, and no pop. looks like i'm going to have to pull the flywheel. can't see any key in the flywheel slot, and can't see the shaft key slot.

Into the cylinders, Daddy. Pull the plugs, squirt some in, replace the plugs.

Good luck. :)

Yup TD, thats the FIRST thing I do with any motor ..squirt a little premix in, plugs back, and if no pop.... we can go to plan "B"..

JB, Scatty, did that, 1st thing, after compression / spark test. left tension on the fly wheel last night. just went out to check and it popped over night. so will check out, when the sun gets up good.

got light enough to see, Key was good, flywheel clean, coils little moldy, not cracked, points clean, timer base moves easily, and not loose. i know it should run.

Are you using Champion J6C at .030?

OK, all is good. put it back together, put about 2 ounces of mix into carb, and it fire right up. now i can go on.

Excellent! Sometimes that first fire-up takes a while. Sounds like you'll have a good solid engine there.

Replace everything in that magneto! Those are original issue coils and at least one condenser looks to be 1958 issue. For under $50.00 you can replace points, coils & condensers and not have to worry about most of that stuff for another generation. Those coils may "look" good, but they're likely to pop at any moment. It's rare that original style (clear plastic coating) coils last as long as yours, but it's not more than likely that they're going to crack, especially now that you're using them - heating up, cooling down, around water/humidity, etc.
