In the pic you posted it looks like it is cut on the inside of the flywheel as well as the outside.

After some measurements (from what I can see from the missing starter) they look real close. Close enough that I am going to hold off on buying one and see when I pull it off. What do you all think?

I believe it will switch sides. I'd do it. Just install the starter before you reinstall the motor and give it a try. You should be able to crank the motor while it's still swingin.

Would be nice to keep the original. Not to mention the money.

From the looks of the ring gear I would recommend replacing it. You can buy that ring gear at your local discount auto parts store for around 20 dollars. It would be mony well spent against a new starter drive.

There is nothing wrong with the gear. I just posted a bad picture. It was from when I first got the motor and I took a bunch of pictures before I took it apart. Most of what you are seeing is red clay, mud, cobwebs, etc, etc.

Like Bondo said- I've changed rings by heating with a torch, and pounding it back on. And this is at a Chevrolet dealership, lol.

If your going to spin the motor over while hanging (or not firmly planted), remove the spark plugs first to avoid some of the torque twist.

Thanks folks I am going to have to try it this weekend if it doesn't rain all weekend again for the third week in a row.
After I figured out that the starter had a issue I stopped building the motor so no plugs to worry about.

Ayuh,.......

It Does look like you Might be able to Sand the Paint off the other side of it,+ Swap it Over,.......

Btw,....... I Prefer to use the Oven,.... Rather than a Torch to heat the ring gear...............Popping the Flywheel into the Freezer makes it go Even Easier.........

If you want the ring to "fall" right on pack the FW in dry ice, along with heating the RG as Bond-o suggested. Any good welding supply place will carry it..................cost is minimal, and it really contracts the FW........-300 deg.F

That wasn't so bad. Pulled the motor and took off the bellhousing. Fixed the flywheel like you all said and put it all back together by 8:30. Now it works.
