Re: Boating the Upper Chesapeake

Is anyone going to be in the Upper Chesapeake tomorrow?? Ashely and I will be out first thing tomorrow morning!

We are also going to be out all day Monday.

I won't be able to make it to the raft up next Saturday unfortunately, I just found out that there is a surprise party for my Mom's bday. I will be out next Sunday though ! :)

You are right..gust guessing. I never seen a commercial crabber using handlines though..lol
Denny
Pretty good assumption, I'd say.
I haven't used handlines since I was just a little 'un crabbing off my grandfather's pier for my lunch.....lol
My uncle and I were doing from pretty serious recreational crabbing for a few years.....he has since turned "pro" (commercial license). Handlines just seem so, I don't know, slow. I don't know of any Md. commercial crabbers who'd get caught dead with one in his possession....most of 'em make fun of handliners....they call 'em "chicken-neckers".
Of course, by no means do I know all commercial crabbers (in fact, I only know two), and more licenses come up for sale every year. So it is possible some nice guy bought one so he could handline off his pier or skiff and sell them locally a dozen at a time just to have something to do and maybe get to know some of his neighbors. I would love to be in a position to do something like that myself. I get a lot of enjoyment out of making other people happy.

Saturday we went out just after noon.It looked nice from the cliffs at Elkview shores but it was kind of choppy after we got out so We only went across to Turkey point .I anchored out ,ate my Sub Sandwich, then started to crab. We were just right of a boat ramp in a small cove. in about 6 ft of water.I had 6 crab pots. I only cought one crab.So we crossed over to the mouth of Cabin John Cove .I had made a drop line earlier in the day so I decided to use it. The pots were geting nothing but that long green grass that's every where. I was surprised that my had line was doing so well. I'd get four or five each time I'd pull it in. And after awhile I decided to give up for the day. So we got back to Stemmers run around 4:30. I did pretty good too I got 40 crabs ,All above 5 and a half inches and only one female that I tossed back. I gave half of them to a neighbor if he'd cook them for me. He did and we had crabs for dinner last night. We won't be in the water next Saturday. We Have our custom car in a show At Dover Downs on the Monster mile.We park in the Pits. They are also have a National Pork cook off going on that day. We may go out on Sunday after noon time. .

Nice Monday on the water with Ashley and Andrew(CaravelleCaptain)!
Of course, the weather alert made us book out of there quick LOL.

Stacey and I went to Cara for a bit, then found out A&A were at Garrett Island so we rafted up with them there. Man is that water clear there, you can see your feet!

Still no storm here yet!

A&A heading back to Port

it was prob an unlighted nun bouy.
Those unlighed bouys can be dangerous at night, even sober.
I think they should all be lighted. if you don't put a light on it, just don't put it out there.

one night i came within 10 ft or a bouy near the sand islands. But i was going 5 mph.

Hello everyone!
I've haven't been posting much because of the ridiculous hours I'm working.
For the past 30 years I've been able to balance recreation and my career. Not anymore.
Maybe I'll get a chance to see some of you before the season's over.

I've gotten some differing info on the water depth at Lloyd's. I need 3 feet. Would I have that if I enter by the cliff's and is that depth available inside the cut? I usually hit Still Pond, but would love to try a new location and meet some of you all.

Thanks

Congrats on the new rank!

From what I have heard, if you enter by the cliffs you will be fine. However, I have not been there before, so hopefully Scott or Stan will jump in and add there 2 cents as well. However, I know Stan has taken his Nova in and I am sure it needs the same clearance as you.

Scott, Stan, any thoughts?

Lets make this happen everyone!!!!

Rob, I guess there is no chance you will be down this Saturday?

The last time we were there there was a very large boat there. It had to be 60 ft long. three decks high.He was anchored by the large bouy near the channel by the docks. It was low tide when I got there. .My first time in I took one of those cut outs in the hedge row of trees out front. I had 9 ft of water there in the center and after in I made a left and I had four feet most of the way in.
