I need to replace the transom behind my mercruiser. I took it to a fiberglass repair shop and he said it would be 500.00 with me taking the motor out . Isn't that most the work? How hard is it to line up the drive shaft hole where it goes through the transom? Is this a job I should attempt?

Re: i/o transom repair

In my experiences its not that it is a real hard job, its that they see someone who can take out the engine but cant fix the hole, so they can charge more since you have to have it done. Many folks have done it, you could use the old hole as a template, that would help.

Me personally, I would do it. But it boils down to what you feel comfortable doing. I wouldnt work on an auto tranny, but will and can do everything else. Could I do it if I tried? maybe, but its beyond my comfort level.

Heres a few links I found:

The only thing I'm concerned about is ... how much room to I have to play with. I don't want to get it built and discover it won't line up ...but it could save me 500.00. Thank's for your input.

If they're going to replace the transom for $500.00 bucks, let them do it, you won't save much money, if any, by doing it yourself. Make sure you both agree on how much work is going to be done for the $500.00 though.

Think about how much time, effort, and cursing you're going to go through just getting the old material out. Then think about the cost of materials, added time, (not to mention a one-shot outdrive cut) spent putting it all back in. Spending $500 for someone else do do the whole shebang is going to seem like the best bargain ever.

Now, if you'd just like to do it yourself . . . well then that's another story.
