150 hp powerhead exchange

I have a 1996 150xl Merc. and I am looking at a 1998 Optimax with a short shaft. Will the 98 optimax fit on my foot assembly? Thanks a lot for any info.

well that depends....

what hp is the optimax? it also depends on what the displacement is of your 150 and what the displacement is of the optimax.

thats why i asked about the HP......

if your 150 is still the 2.5L style than NO it wont fit.
if your 150 is the newer 3.0L style, than it MIGHT... youd have to compare powerhead base gasket part numbers to tell 100 percent.

is your 150 carb'd or FI?.

im guessing it wont, though.

Mine is the old one, with carbs. Guess it will not fit. I'll have to make the decision to rebuild or buy another engine. I just bought the boat and I knew the engine was blown. The crank looks good and i have ordered a manual to get the specs. Decisions, Decisions!
