Has anybody on this board had rotator cuff surgery?

Has anybody on this board had rotator cuff surgery? I had it done Monday, it was caused by dropping my boat and it slipping off of the ball, to keep it from rolling into the back of my truck I tried to push it with my right arm.

Big mistake, at first thought it would be ok in a few days, that didn’t happen, went to the Doc he took x-rays plus mri,s. long story shortened here I am trying to post on iboats with one arm ,my left one at that.

The first day out of surgery it wasn’t so bad, that was before the dope wore off. My arm is in this funky sling with what looks like it has a boat bumper on the inside,Doc says get used to it dude you will be wearing it for six weeks.

The wife’s walking around with this smirk on here face anticipating the opportunity to give me a shower. I fooled her went and bought a three foot shower brush.

Don’t know if this was all caused by the dropping of the boat, or the accumulated effects of my past history of weight training. Guess it could be a little of both. of course when training with weights I always warm up before a lift, sure wasn’t warmed up when the boat started rolling .

No, but I'm wondering if I did the same. I was in an awkward position pushing 85' of CAT5 cable down into a box while the guy on the other end was pulling. A few days later it hit me that my right shoulder was screwed. Holding my right arm straight up in the air is painful. Reaching over to scratch the back of my left shoulder is almost impossible. I'm in the hoping it's going to get better phase.

Were you taking hydrocodone? If so, did they give you Metamucil to go with it?

One of my brothers had it done a few months ago. Long slow recovery for far, but he's sticking to the doc's plan. Good luck to you.

Sorry to hear about the injury. I hope you have a quick recovery. Follow the Dr's orders.

I had a slight tear in my rotator cuff last year. Fortunately, it seems to have healed on its own.

Sorry to hear about it . I'm a veteran at it. 6/89 I was pulling on a pipe at work to break bolt loose on a fixture on a CNC lathe and the machine had some kind of failure and it jogged the chuck as i was pulling and ripped the ball out of the socket in the shoulder, to make a long story short I was out of work till 3/91 . I have surgery twice for inpingment on the same one and retore it in 2000 and lost another 9 months from work. My advise to you do your threapy and don't rush anything it is important to heal properly and completely. It take a lot of time and pain to heal but bear with it.......you will be fine in time. I had a Morphine pump for the first week following the operations. You will most likely be on Perocet's for pain for awhile don't have happen what happened to me , my doctor let take them to long and I was hooked on them and went thru withdrawls, it sucked.........Ted

I had shoulder surgery about 25 years ago. It was horrible to find out how important the shoulder is when trying to do simple tasks like sitting up.....

Follow your physical therapy routine to the letter! I was constantly working on mine and doing all the things to keep it mobile. I used surgical tubing for resistance and isometrics. It will hurt a bit when you are recovering so, work your way through it.

Mine is not 100% and will never be however, I went back to lifting weights and just became a bit more cautious.

Good luck with it and I wish you a speedy full recovery!

Dont complain about those minor dings

I had FULL adult reconstructive surgery with a closed reduction with 2 points of fixation

I think the worst part was the new intern sending me home and telling me it would be FINE and the doctor finding his FUBAR and telling we a WEEK later we needed to do surgery ASAP and I might never move my arm correctly again

I can tell you all about PT if you need 

I’ll most likely be doing that Bob. I used to be one of the iron heads at the Squat rack that made fun of the people coming into the gym playing with there rubber bands and using the five pound pulley wts.{OOO the embarrassment of it AAalll.}

Seriously, I will be glad to get into therapy and get off of this damn sling, cant wait for the six weeks to get over with, which will be Dec. the eighth. Am doing plenty of cardio now but have to be careful not to bump this cotton pickin thing, don’t want any set backs. Will most likely continue hiking the trails, can do that even with one arm.And thanks for all of the replies from everyone.

Hey Dan been in that gym, not my kid of gym being old Turner alumni. Any body in the St Louis area when you say old style gym they think George Turner. That is most likely what got me into the pickle im in now; Old age and power lifting don’t go together. :%

When I had my surgery I was driving a full size chevy blazer with bucket seats. I also used to wrap the surgical tubing around the passenger seat and work it out on my way to work....... assuming it is your right shoulder.

Went to the Doc. yesterday. He's trying to talk me out of it since it's my left and I'm right handed.

I have mobility, I just can't lift my arm over my head.

Still debating. What has the mobility benefit been for others?

Re: Has anybody on this board had rotator cuff surgery?

Re: Has anybody on this board had rotator cuff surgery?

i would talk to a different orthopedic surgeon your WAY to young to spend the rest of your life with that loss

i did not really have ANY options as it was FUBAR in every possable way

The end result was pretty amazing BUT took about 1 year of PT 3 nights a week and about 5 years to not have bad pain when bicycle rideing again

My arm started with ZERO movement it was a great day when i scratched my ear again 3 months later :) small things make you very happy when your life changes that much

After 6 months i was able to get rid of the sling an things got much better much faster after that

In the end i can do pretty much everything i did before but work overhead work will always be painfull and there is a loss of range of movement of about 30 %

What was really strange and why recovery took a long time is that the muscle groups in my left arm grew back in a compleaty different way than orginal

Different groups got much stronger and were able to take over movements that they did not do originally to help out the dammaged groups :)

The tricep muscle group became about twice as strong

Thanks Tommays.

Interesting point on the muscles. It makes sense though.

More to think about. I'll take your advice and see another Ortho.
