I need to get to my tilt motor to replace it. However the brackets on each side of the tilt assy will not come off the tilt tube. I unscrewed the nuts on each end and tried pounding on it with a piece of wood and hammer. I refered to the assy diagram on the Evinrude site, and it looks like it should just pop right out. How can I get to the tilt motor?

Yep, if you don't support the motor you're gonna end up with some sore toes. If they're still there after the crash.

Yes, the engine is already on a hoist and off of the boat. But I can't seem to get the mount brackets to budge off the tilt tube. The tube and brackets rotate just fine. They just don't want to come apart.

OK, if you have the motor on a hoist, make sure the trim unit is not all the way down or up. It may help to take the bolts out that go from the bracket to the trim unit. Sometimes it's easier to take a bracket off or even both brackets.

Well,it's a tough job on an older motor. On a new motor it WILL 'pop right out'. Actually it will push right out.

I usually attack these motors with them horizontal,on the floor, resting on the back off the lower motor cover (pan).
Keep in mind if (when) you apply heat, there are nylon parts that will melt and need replacing.

If you have all the bolts out from the brackets and large nuts off ,its time for the HEAT WRENCH.If you have a buddy with a oxy act set have him heat the arms up for ya .get em hot and they WILL come off. No buddy, get a can of MAPP gas, like the old propane but hotter, that should do. No after all is apart, you need to do yourself a big favor ,get yourself a new stainless tube, stainless nuts and new plastic bushings and washers. You will never have a steering system lock up again, money well spent and the plastic parts will be trashes anyway
