Hi,
My jetski has quite a rough idle and it doesn't seem to go quite as fast as it used to. Otherwise it runs fine. I haven't ever tuned it up or anything like that in the 4 years I've owned it. Where should I begin to look to get it running better?

Thank you

first check compression. if thats within spec then I would definately CHANGE the plugs ( they are definately foled out which may be the cause of the rough idle. i woudl also clean the carbs, do a pump oil change, change the oil filter and clean the fuel water separator.

rave valves sticking will scrob top end loose exhaust flange bolts will also do that, and a 951 engine is not the engine you want to neglect maintenance wise, when they go they really go big time also fuel selector switches can rob your top end by restricting fuel flow

Thanks for all of the good advice, I'll change the plugs and oil filter immediately (these sound easy) but I'll have to buy a manul to check the fuel/water separator, pump ooil change and rave values (as I have no diea where these things are).

you don't change oil it is a 2 stroke, and be carefull about any water in the hull, those will draw in water because the air box is so low and grenade a piston or worse

OK, that makes more sense. It didn't strike me that it was a 2-stroke when I was reading the first response. I was wondering why I never thought about doing an oil change.

I ordered a shop manual on ebay earlier today, but it's not here yet. I can change plugs easily enough, but how can I check the rave valves? Where are they located? Is it a difficult process?

Also, which part of the carbs should be cleaned? I read that there's some sort of filter in there? I've changed the gas filter, so that's fine.

Any info that I can do immediately would be great.

Thank you.

the routine maintenance requires cleaning the raves, when you get the book you need to look it up it is easy, as for the carbs on a 951 they are a pain in the butt to get to but the book will tell you all that also, it is way over due on yours and the fuel switch may be going bad also plus the fuel lines get all green and gummed up inside.
