volvo 280 outdrive, adjusting shift cable?

Can anyone tell me how to properly adjust a new shift cable on a volvo 280 system.

control in neutral. drive in neutral (shift crank horizontal)
wind the brass nut untill it fits neatly in the slot. good to go.
make sure to use the jam nut.
