Re: What brand of computer are you using

Still have the first compter I ever bought. It was a Packard Bell force 450. I have upgraded to a 133mghz AMD and a new hard drive. Now running Windows se. Works well for a word processor and old games.
The next one is a 400mhz AMD P-III. Just put in a new 40ghz harddrive and is on Win-XP SP-II.
The third comp. is a Dell 4600C p-4 at 533 mhz bus. Had since last Dec. no problems.
The last one is a Dell P-4 2.4mhz HT at 800mgz bus with a 128 video graphics card(nvida). This is the base station with broadband modem(motorolla) with a WIFI to all the computers.
Still hate computers.

I build all my own computers now... I made the mistake of a store bought some years ago.

Although the store-bought never gave me much trouble, I can get a whole lot more when I build my own (or at least better quality)

I run an Asus A7N8X Deluxe, AMD XP3200+, 1 gig Crucial RAM, ATI Radeon 9800 Pro video card.

I'm on Wireless high speed internet ('round 80-100k/sec d/l)

It gets me around!

H.

Re: What brand of computer are you using

Another option is to buy a "bare bones" package which usually is the case, motherboard, and memory, and power supply, and then tailor the rest to what you want/need. Some bare bones deals are a better price than if you bought the parts individually yourself. Just make sure the motherboard is upgradable and compatible with whatever else you want.

Re: What brand of computer are you using

If I HAD to buy a store bought it would be a middle of the road Dell. But I have never yet bought a computer. Only parts. Only once a lot of parts at once. DIY is the only way for me. And I get decent but not tip top quality, then run them until they are museum ready.

Soyo MB
Duron 800 CPU
256 MB Ram
60 Gb Seagate Barracuda IDE
6.4 Gb Fujitsu IDE (remember them?)
Geforce MX440 (Works OK for me, too)
ADSL, dynamic IP, ~1.5 MBPS down, slower up.
Lite-on CD Burner (only brand I'll buy- label brand may be different but if made by Lite-on it will work fine. Never made a coaster yet.)
Labtech Spin 55 speakers.
Windows 98se.
I'll brag about being cheap, but I'm not proud of the W98, OK?! This system works just fine, still. No need yet to upgrade. No, I'm not a big gamer.

At work- too many to count, too diverse to describe. But the OLD Macs are almost all gone now! Yipee! (the very newest was a G3 running OS 8.5; most were power PC5200/75 MHz running 7 something. Ugh!) My workstation is a 2Ghz Celeron based tiny desktop with 15" LCD monitor. T1 via fiber right to my own switch! Only 30 feet too far to have a gigabit connection right at my machine! But 100 MBPS is OK too! Home run to my server. NOW we're talking....

Mark... I just stuffed a Radeon 9800 pro 256 in mine... It runs Doom 3 very nicely!
However... you still can't run it on the extreme settings. It's a memory hog.

H.

Re: What brand of computer are you using

Main PC is a Dell Dimension 8250 2.4gig Pentium 4 w/XP Pro. Added DVD burner and 512 memory to handle the VideoWave movie making package (render digital video from camcorder onto dvd's) and ATI 9000 radion video card. Just bought Doom3 and its pushing the limits of that card. Also running CyberPatrol to keep the kids out of the bad sites and limit the time they can spend chatting every day.

This Dell is the first name brand PC I bought. The other two I have are built from bare-bones packages:. 1) A 233mmx that is still a great web surfer and word processer. 2) A 1.7 gig P4 with nice ATI video card so we can play video games against each other over the house network. I love tracking down my boy (14yr old) and taking him out in some imaginitive way in Delta Force Black Hawk Down. But the fact is, he usually gets me. :(

Re: What brand of computer are you using

Homerr,

Have you downloaded the patch for Doom3? Its so darn big I can't do it over the dial up because the ATT server gets reset every night and it will take about 36 hours to get the whole thing. I ask because every now and again the game locks up. I reboot and it continues on its merry way. Doesn't lock up in the same place. Must be the new engine. I think its locked up 4 times on me.

Oh yeah, that game is creepy and cool. The monsters are nasty and fast. I like to play a game all the way through without cheats at least once so I can claim I "Beat the game". But this one may be the exception!

How much did the new radeon cost?
