I have a no start problem with my 85 chrysler. I have traced it down to having no spark, I followed a trouble shooting guide online and it tells me to ground out the points and see if the coil sparks well the the coil does but that's as far as the guide goes and doesn't tell be what is the cause all I know is that the coil is not bad now. all the wiring looks great no cracks or anything thank you in advance

Where is the preamp at? and what does it look like?

If yes, the points OR preamp in the distributor is bad.

Chrysler made three ignitions for that motor. Magnapower CD ignition, (delta system), Magnapower CD Ignition (Motorola System) and battery ignition with alternator. Does the motor have a CD unit? The marine doctor may be of better help to you on this question. He is at the link I posted for you on magnapower troubleshooting.

You will have to get a fitting to screw into the drain plug hole.
Only use 4-7# of air pressure.

Did you use new gaskets on the plugs?
You might want to try that.
Otherwise, might as well replace all the seals while you have it tore down.

Re: 85hp Chrysler no spark

These older motors tend to form wear spots on the Prop shaft and drive shaft where they come in contact with the seals. These spots will leak slightly when the motor is spinning and not show up on a pressure test. I hope it is just the drain and fill plug gaskets. If not try going to mercury high performance gear lube. If you really want to go into the lower unit get a seal kit HERE

Re: 85hp Chrysler no spark

Motor is a 1971. The lower unit will be the same as on the link above. The seal kit is generic so some parts will be used and some wont. It is designed for multiple lower units. The only gasket you will need is if it is a two part lower unit. That gasket can be made from gasket paper and removable permatex. No special tools needed however a harmonic balancer will make removing the bearing cage easier. I would not go there yet though. Replace the drive shaft seal under the water pump, the drain and vent gaskets first and see if that fixes it. The pivot screw gasket can be changed if you are careful but if you arent it will require a complete tear down in order to hook it back up.

I'll start there and see if the shafts have grooves in them. I don't think there will be this motor does not look like it has very many hours on it, it most likely has a dried up seal. do you ever make it to the missouri at all?

I took the lower end down today and found bubbles coming from the shift shaft seal.. anything special about replacing that seal? looks like i can drill a little hole and get it out with my O ring pik.. also does anyone know if there is a generic part number maybe NAPA would have? thanks alot
