The other day while out on the river after about an hour or two I lost my reverse on a 1994 Force 40hp it made a grinding noise when the motor was put in reverse. The forward still worked fine.
After getting it home I checked it out and found that what looks like a seal behind the prop was broke where the bolts hold it tight to the lower unit. Upon further inspection I also noticed that the fin on the bottom is cracked up through the bolt holes as well. I understand this is a major problem (expenseive) so I'm trying to find out what years and what hp motors are compatible with mine which is a 1994 Force 40hp.

Re: cracked lower unit housing

I'd suggest taking it all apart yourself, and see if it can be welded by a weld shop. I've used some permatex cold weld on a crack I had on the cavitation fin, but yours sounds more severe.

If its not something that can be welded/patched, then you're going to want to start hunting ebay and other online places for the lower unit housing. Also call the local marinas, check your paper for boating equipment, garage sales, etc, as those Force motors are out there...you just need to find them.

Best of luck!

I found this website http://www.mercruiserparts.com I can use this to cross referace parts that I may need. While using this site i figured out all I should need is the Basic gear Housing Kit and Cage assembly total about $210.00.
