1962 Jupiter (I think), Just purchased...

Well... My "Traveler" has seen better days, and I REALLY like the "Starmada" crowd! I just bought what I believe is a "Jupiter" off CL, haven't even got her home yet. I love these old Starcrafts (previously owned a 19' Holiday way back). I have a Mercury "Classic 50" that I hope will get her on plane, so I guess I'll start by asking just that... Will a 1989 4cyl 45hp Merc give me any kind of performance? I have it on my (very waterlogged/heavy) 1966 Traveler right now. I imagine the SC to be a LOT lighter, so hoping for the best. Also, this year (1962) seems to have virtually no "vee" in back, so may plane easier? Can always sell the 45hp to offset price of something bigger. Just want a crabbing/fishing boat out of her. Thanks to anyone that takes the time for advice.

As I said, I just purchased her, and will be bringing her home as soon as the PO gets the paperwork back (replacement title, should be about a week). He just put a new 3/4" ply floor in, and looks like he did a pretty good job. New dash also, with no steering, seats or anything. There is what looks like the original windshield (curved type) sitting inside. I'll be using my "Traveler" as a parts boat, cannabalizing the teleflex steering, seats (pedestal type), and whatever other hardware that I can use before I cut up and haul her to the dump. I may even use the newer "Shoreline" trailer that's under her. The Traveler is pretty soft floor/stringers gone and has a pronounced "hook" where it sits on the trailer rollers. I may even be able to use the top/tower that I constructed for her on the Jupiter (see thread/link below). I want her to be a good crabber, so I'd like to keep an "open" design. of coarse I'll document everything right here, so maybe I can get (or give) some direction if needed.

Thank you csmith1975. Thanks Watermann... Looking through your Chieftain rebuild now, among a few others going on. Very cool!! What "hearty" boats these are! I'm happy to have another. It may be the start of something big (searching for old Starcrafts to rebuild)! I have a "ginger breaded" pleasure boat (2000 Bayliner 2052 Cuddy)... only wish SHE was aluminum!!

OK, I had to re-learn how to post pics from Photobucket (the iboats "upload image" feature isn't very user friendly. Anyway, assuming that she is indeed a 1962 (what the seller advertised her as), does she appear to be a Jupiter? I don't know what the differences between the Jupiter and Nassau are. Perhaps just the interior/trim, in which case this boat seems to be long rid of her interior. As stated, there is a curved style windshield (cracked) sitting inside on the new deck (sole). I will post more pics when I get her home and start working on her. I'll ask the seller how he replaced the deck, did he replace foam underneath, and what did he use to coat the plywood (it's shiny). Wondering if I should start a new thread when work commences on her, and if I should continue to put it here in the "starcraft" section, or would I be better putting it in the "restoration" section. Any advise? Still waiting for the replacement paperwork to come in before I pay the balance and bring her home.

Well took a little longer than expected to post more. But I did get my "new" Jupiter home. Looks like she'll be a nice little fish/crab boat for me. The data plate says 40hp maximum!! I'm happy about that, as I have a Merc "classic 50" (45hp) that should go pretty good on her. I guess the Jupiter's light weight and almost flat "vee" in back call for less hp. I kept the tower/top from my old "Traveler", and it fit's fine. I just have to fab some new brackets to mount it. How about some pics!!

My Merc "classic 50" 4cyl. Runs great, hope she's enough for a little fun! Here, she's mostly stripped and sanded, getting ready for the Zinc Chromate primer, and a nice coat of Acrylic Urethane Gloss Black from Summit Racing.
