Thanks for taking a peek.

Man you guys have it rough with the temps, here in NE WA State, about 40 miles south of BC our temps rarely drop below zero, maybe every 10 or 15 years. Normally our coldest winter weather is in the teens F. We got the cold dropping too though, 8 f this morning here with a 15 mph north wind. Here's a clip from my garage security camera showing my poor ole truck with a battery problem.

That doesn't look like very nice weather either.

Lordy - That looks like winter there, Waterman. Made me shiver down here.

I'm actually kinda fond of that smell. If somebody bottled that up in an aftershave, I'd buy it:becky:

Hey Jason - I think Ralph Lauren makes that flavor of aftershave. I think it's called Eau de Polo ?curie. Probably sounds better than it smells. :watermelon:

One of the things I was dreading is now behind me after today, the lower channel for the transom was covered in 40 year old grease and corrosion. It's all clean and SE primed now. One step lower than watching paint dry is primer drying. That is of course unless your into the kinda thing we are, then it means more progress towards the rebuild.

Got some more clean up done this weekend, sanded down all of the mahogany supports for the bow cover, next up spar soaking.

Finished the clean up work and SE primer on the center cabin bulkhead.

Also you tin heads that like to use vinegar for cleaning up the aluminum, I found the perfect thing.

I had no idea one of the 57 varieties was Heinz Special Cleaning Vinegar. It's 6% acid where ordinary white vinegar is 5%, so it has a little more kick.

Finished the mahogany bow cover supports today, finished sanding and got a coat of Helmsman spar on them all.

Shot some more primer on the bulkhead support pieces and then tore into the lower plexi windshield. I should have known that it was going to be a big mess. SC used some ferrous metal clips in the aluminum channels for holding the plexi. Yeah they were lumps of rust and corrosion probably 20 years ago. Wheeled off corrosion, scrubbed sealer and dirt. I had planned on keeping the frames around the windshields clean aluminum but after seeing corrosion eating pits into the frames I decided to go ahead with priming and painting to halt the progress.

I have a good friend who owns a glass company so I'm hoping he can get some similar sealer strips to seal the glass into the frames. I have my doubts about finding the weatherstrip that goes underneath. I may have to use some other sort of product.

WM - Is the white stuff on the right side with the T-bolt studs through it the seal strip? I've seen something similar used to insulate between wood sill plates and concrete or block basement walls. I think it's called foam insulation padding or sill plate gasket. Similar to this: Sill Plate I have seen white material.

GT, no it's a vinyl seal, here's a pic of a piece I cut off to save for a match.

It's 1-3/8" wide with the bevel but the center piece that the windshield channel fit's into it is 1". Got that frame cleaned up and primed so...

I'm on the upper windshield now, good lord it's going to be a chore having to grind off the heads on most of the rusted factory steel sheet metal screws to get it apart. The old cover snaps have eaten holes into the frame too so they come out easy.

Going to have to look into getting a base seal for the upper windshield as well. I believe the little seal that trims the glass is all the same. Another reason I'm going to have to paint the windshields trim, repaired corrosion holes full of JB and MT.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Went primer shopping this morning at 0700, normally I use the rusto SE primer but I found rusto professional aluminum primer this morning and got a spray can to try out. It covered way better on the trim pieces I shot. Been looking for something in quarts that i can use my HVLP gun to shoot the entire hull in short order rather than trying to rattle bomb it. The only rusto aluminum primer I could find there was a latex based quart. I don't think I want to shoot oil based paint over latex based primer, can't be a good outcome to that.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

5 hours of work went into tearing down that top windshield. I wouldn't blame anyone for leaving it alone. I just couldn't stand leaving the corrosion, rotten, leaky seals and rusted screws. Tools needed, grinder, hammer, steel putty knife, punch, screw drivers and some classic rock in the background. Now I have a bunch of channel clean up and 4 very thick heavy panes of glass.

Took a time out during the day to smoke up some venison jerky. I have a guard waiting for the door to get opened.
