After a long search for a big water, ocean ready Starcraft (Islander, Chieftain, Holiday) that didn't cost me an arm and a leg, left me room in my budget for a kicker motor, and required minimal work to make it my own, I bought one last weekend - 1974 21 CHM4 I/0

The owner has always kept the boat covered and the owner before him apparently kept it covered too. The transom is solid and appears to be the second one (transom end caps are missing - anyone know where to get replacements). The floor is in good shape, but does need to be treated and covered. The original flotation is dry. There is some cosmetic work to be done with the interior, but most of it is minor. The current owner re-wired the boat using the original wires, which looked to be in great condition; he also put in new console gauges, a Perko battery switch, two house batteries and a starter battery; new 27 gallon and 12 gallon back-up gas tank and a new marine water pump for the sink. The cushions in the cuddy are original and don?t have any rips, tears or mold; the icebox is original. The boat was professinally painted 6 years ago and the bottom of the boat was painted last year with Petit Vivid Free antifouling paint over epoxy at a Marina that does good work. The canvas you see in the picture is about two years old and from what I can tell worth $800 - $1000. The zincs on the outdrive and boat appear to be working as they should.

The sterndrive is a raw water cooled inline 6, 165 HP Mercruiser that is in great shape and a refurbished pre-alpha gen 1 with a Mercury Alpha 4 prop. To see more pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nomrwrk/sets/72157629251252186/

A BIG THANK YOU to Pugetsound who saw the boat on CL and told me to check it out. He was extremely helpful as well as all of you; the guidance and advice that has been posted on this forum was extremely helpful. I also want to give a shout-out to elkhunter338 who gave me some great information a year and half ago about is Chieftain and how it performed on the Pacific. The Starmada is awesome!

Thanks guys. I do have a grin ear-to-ear :D. I can't wait to get her registered for 2012 and on the water.

BTW - The Chieftain came with its orignial MerCruiser Stern Drive Operation and Maintenance Manual for Models 120-140-165, published 5/73. If anyone needs some info from the manual, please let me know.

I will replace them. They are a bit too rusty for my comfort and appear undersized to keep 4,000 pounds under control. I have few more projects like this one, but they are quick and an easy fixes. The trailer will be dipped into salt water, so it will need my attention fairly quickly. The surge brakes work like a charm.

Thanks Ed. Yeah, that canvas top is awesome. It was custom made by a local shop with a good rep. I called them earlier today to find our how much it would cost to custom make another one. They quoted $1,000 - $1,500 without seeing the boat. My offer still stands to come down and take a look. I'll have it on the water in a month or two - need to complete registration for boat and trailer. That'll take a few weeks, plus our weather has been lousy. Thank goodness I have a place to keep out of the weather and reasonably warm.

Re: Found My Boat - Water Ready 21' 1974 Chieftain

Just received my registration card and 2012 stickers for the Chieftain and new tags for the trailer. I decided to pull-off the old boat registration stickers and discovered the hull was professionally painted in 2003. The Chieftain was registered from 2003 - 2007, then in 2009 and again in 2011. She sure hasn't had hard life the past 8 or 9 years.

Friday, I'm taking her to see my mechanic for complete and thorough engine and outdrive inspection. Although she fired-up and everything appeared to be in working order, I don't want to find out 10 miles off-shore or on outgoing tide in the Columbia River that there was a problem brewing. I also want to find out if the valve seats have been hardneded or not (the PO didn't know). The kicker that was on the boat had been plumbed to the main tanks, which makes me think they had been hardended; I can't imagine running a lead additive through a 4-stroke engine. Plus I need to buy a kicker and I don't know if I can use the main takes or have to use portable tank. It will also help me decide to buy a 4 or 2-stroke motor. If there is anything specific I should have checked-out (boat, engine or outdrive), please share.

I wouldn't worry about the valve seats. It will handle unleaded just fine as all the pre-unleaded car, truck and boat motors do. Short of pulling the head the mechanic won't be able to tell anything about the valve seats. Also any 4 stroke kicker new or old, would be an unleaded motor.

I would change the impeller, change the lower unit oil and do a motor oil/filter change for peace of mind. Check spark plugs, plug wires, distributor cap, rotor and points. Basically normal maintenance. Also until you get comfy with a new old boat, stay close to shore a few times for confidence building. After that cruise to Hawaii. LOL

nmrwrk,
I see you live in Oregon, going to go out in the Pacific Ocean? Which port?
Your 74 looks like my 86 but in interior color and is different, the boat from the outside looks the same. It will do well in rough water, just can't go a fast as the fiberglass guys with the deep v hulls. The 165hp should push you along at 30+, my 140 tops out at about 28. Trolling for salmon I added a trolling plate to my I/O which works great.
Kicker motor? I have a 2 stroke 15hp johnson (2001) with 4 blade solas prop 9 pitch I get 5 mph in the ocean.
I tried a 25hp kicker and got 7 mph, but the it was over proped. I personally for ocean fishing would go with a 15 hp long shaft or larger. I looked at the 20hp honda's but the $ was just too much.
I had to come in from 7 miles out once on the kicker (spun a engine coupler), then the other time the coast guard came and got me because it was such a nice day I think they wanted a boat ride. I was headed for port and had radioed I would need atow across the bar since the tide was going to be going out. That time I broke a cam gear on the engine.
With 39 gallons of fuel you should be able to run out 20 miles. I run 2-4 mpg depending on weather and you should get about the same fuel mileage

MOMRWRK Sorry you dident buy my boat BUT Iv sold it three times for more than asked for it. Where the h-- do these people come from, out of the wood work OH Im supposed to send them the ballance after I take out my share of the funds. LOL I just take them to the bank and hopefully some fraud division can put a stop to a bit of it. Actually Im sure your choice was a wise one nice boat and close to home great deal for you. I have had a offer or two by serious folks with no money so the conversation is brief. Good luck and keep us posted on the boat and your adventures. Pugetsound.

Re: Found My Boat - Water Ready 21' 1974 Chieftain

Hey guys, sorry for the late reply. I've been traveling since April 1st and haven't had much time to login. The good news, my mechanic called me and said everything looks good and runs great - the timings were way-off and most of the fluids were passed their prime - not too surprising. My mechanic was impressed with her and thought I had a great "old girl!" He had fun during the water test and said that he got a lot of compliments. Man, that made me feel good.

Elkhunter - Thank you again for your great input. Based on the 2-4 mpg estimate, I think I'll upsize the 12 gallon fuel tank. Rather have more fuel on board than I need. Do you carry extra fuel cannisters on board? If yes, where do you store them? I'm still looking for a good 4stroke kicker with an extra long shaft that won't break the bank (GA_Boater - my mechanic agreed that I do not need to worry about adding lead additive, but he told me to not use anything less than premium fuel and to replace the water seperator every season). I agree that a 15HP is in order. I typically launch out of Newport as it tends to be the easiest and most reliable port near me. I'll also launch out of Hammond to fish the lower Columbia, but I stay inside the mouth and fish up to the Astoria Bridge for Silvers and Nooks. I belive you also launch out of Newport. Any trips planned around the beginning of Halibut season?

Pugetsound, I read about the leak in the boat. Man, I'm sorry that happened. Is she good as new or still drawing-in water? Yes, there are a lot of jerks in the PNW trying to take advantage of boat sellers. I also know that there are a lot of people who would love to own your 22 ft Holiday. The challenge is marketing her to the right type of buyer. Everyone assumes a 1970 something boat and motor should be dirt cheap or sent to the junk yard. It's the nature of our throw-away society. But my offer still stands to help you list and sell her. Send me a PM if want some help.

I'll be back home late next week and keep you guys informed of my progress. I need to finish sealing the transom to ensure rot doesn't start, put on the transom end caps, buy a kicker, install my Lowarance chartplotter/fishfinder and complete the outfitting per US Coast Guard requirements. I'm hoping I can get that done before May 1st so I can get her in the water and become comfortable with how she loads and unloads on the trailer, operates on the water and sort out any kinks. My goal is to be ready for this year's Halibut season.

I'll try my best guys. I need some good eats as the freezer is out of Halibut. I'll also post pics of Spring Chinook Salmon. The run on the Columbia and Willamette Rivers are starting to look good. Now if I can just live up to my handle, "no more work!". I need to play!
