I'm planning to winterize a 90 hp Mariner engine. Is it ok to use the Antifreeze that is used on Travel trailers .and mobile homes.?

I've never used any type of anti freeze in an outboard, store it in the full down running position and all the water will drain out of the motor. Fog the cylinders and crank case and you are good to go. Also drain and refill the lower unit with fresh gear lube and that should be all that you have to do.

And... grease the fittings for steering and tilt, and grease the steering rod. If motor used in saltwater, spray powerhead with anti corrosion stuff.

drain fuel, store vertically, drain gear case oil and re-fill, grease prop shaft and steering/tilt tubes = winterized

spray power head as needed for corrosion.

fog if it makes you feel fuzzy

Winterizing out board motor.

I have a 90 hp Mariner outboard motor .When it's time to winterize the motor can I use motor home style antifreeze in stead of auto antifreeze and about how much will I need. Thanks.

Why start a new thread with the same question, especially when your question was answered 3 times?

No anti freeze in an outboard.

It would all drain out on the ground, as the engines are self draining.

I've always taken an out board motor to be winterized, Most dealers have a barrel filled with an antifreeze mix .They back the boat up to the barrel and soak the motor into the barrel, then they run the motor for a while making sure the pisser has the mix coming out. You can also buy kits for us do it at home nuts..

If you google winterizing an out board motor kit.you may be in for a surprise. The kit cost $26.95 for a 5 gallon container with hook ups. then you put your rabbit ears on the water inlet and go from there.Of coarse you put some kind of container under the prop to catch the liquid .

What am I not understanding. If everything drains out of an outboard, then whats the point to running anti freeze into it? Are there water jackets that need antifreeze ?? And, if there are then that would mean all outboards need to be winterized??

They sell gluten free Rice Chex, too.

You're wasting your money using antifreeze, any antifreeze, to winterize an outboard. Better to spend the money on lower unit lube and check for water in the lower. That's what will break if the lower is full of water to freeze.

You guy's are so dumb, Why do you suppose that places like West Marine sell Winterizing kit's if there not needed. Better safe then sorry. How do you suppose motors have heads freeze up I the winter.?

Sooo, are you saying that outboards should be wintirized??? Do outboard heads freeze??

If thats the case then the statement " all outboards need winterizing" is true

Also ,if thats the case, then there should be plenty of outboards damaged in the winter?

West marine will sell you a winterizing kit for anything. Inboard, outboard, refrigerator, water system, etc. They would sell you a winterizing kit for your wife if you so desired.

sorry, didnt mean to sound so " dumb".

I'm not dumb enough to spend gas money on something that's unneeded. Why do marine outlets sell outboard winterizing kits? Because people like you won't listen and buy them. And don't forget the antifreeze, 5 gallons at 6-10 bucks each or more for roughly a hundred clams with shipping. What did P.T. Barnum say?

BTW - The kits are all called outboard/IO/ inboard kits. IO's and inboards need winterizing and those of us with hundreds, if not thousands, of years of combined experience tell you outboards don't get winterized with antifreeze. OB's use fogging oil, gas draining and sitting vertically for winterizing - That's it along with lower unit lube change.

Hey tacx - Got a part number for an Admiral winterizing kit? I get too many cold stares!

the same reason you can buy blinker fluid, red-line water-wetter, Marvel Mystery Oil and run premium fuel in a toyota tercell. same reason they sell 99% of the products with the label "as seen on TV"

because an advertisement somewhere is designed to separate the meek minded from their money.

unless you ran your outboard into mud, thus plugging the water passages, an outboard is self draining when stored vertically

having personally winterized hundreds of outboards, using a "winterizing kit" did nothing but transfer $28 from your wallet to West Marine who in turn transferred $14 to its chinese manufacturer.

I suppose there is truth in the adage that you can't teach an old dog new tricks but since I'm nearly 80 years old and have owned just a few boats in those years, you will need to school me on how you intend to keep antifreeze inside an outboard engine. As everyone has said, they are self draining -- geez -- even water doesn't stay in there. Auto style engines used in "V" drive and I/O powered boats do require winterizing. But drain the engine block and associated coolers and you don't need antifreeze for those either because -- well -- air doesn't freeze.
