ECM problem ! Swap 2004 Mercruiser 5.0L to a 2014 5.7L block. (2005 Sea Ray Sundeck 240)

I've been unable to find an answer for 3 years. All anyone can tell me is that I need a different ECM to run the new 5.7 block.

I have a 2005 Sea Ray 240 SunDeck with a 5.0L Bravo MPI. engine serial no. OW068236. open cooling
I replaced that 5.0L engine block with a new (2014) 5.7L (MAG 350) long block
I sold the original 5.0L Motorola ECM 555 with the part no. 865836 with a serial no. of W9010VI1 and manufacture date of 08-10-2004 because it would not be compatible.

I bought a 350 MAG Bravo ECM0713 dated 02-27-2013 (8M2001111) (8M2003678) (A30004IS) bar codes. I did this thinking it would work, however, the motor starts up , runs for a few seconds and dies. I've been told now that there are many different compatibilities for certain years and certain applications and that a 2013 ECM might not work with my new system seeing how it's an original 2004-05 boat with all those original parts but back on the 5.7L.

SO, is what I need an August 2004 ECM that will run the 5.7L. (Bravo) ??
... Does ANYONE know what I need? Will the ECM0402 5.7L dated close to the original 5.0L ECM work? Is it that easy?

I've called Whipple and Simon and OBD - neither one have been able to help me, or give me a straight answer/resolution.
I just need to know what ECM will work with the provided information...... how hard can it be ?

Someone !!!!! PLEASE !!

My opinion you will need 866124T01 or 6 for a 350 Mag MPI Open cooling

Reasoning:
Used your 5.0 S/N to get the year range
They do not make a 5.7 MPI only a 350 MPI

You need a 350mpi ecu. Fuelling is totally different on 5.0 mpi and won’t run.

You might try contacting the people that MEFIburn. They have ECMs and can program and tune them. You could also get the software to see what is going on and why it dies.

Hey guys, no one can reprogram a 555, their password protected and I have discussed with Bob at MEFIBurn via email. Now Whipple has some tunes for their chargers, but no stock tunes.

Their website says they can on the 555 page. Maybe it was copied and pasted to the wrong page.

Thx for the help everyone !! Today, I just happened to stumble across a 350 MAG ECM0402 that is dated 1 day before my original ECM 555 for the 5L. This is a August 9, 2004 350 BRAVO ECM. Surely, this could be it ! If not, I guess I will try the 866124T01 or 06. Fingers crossed. Thanks so much to you all who took the time to help. I'll update next week... hopefully, this can help others in the same "boat" too ! :fish2:

So I got what I thought was a good ECM off ebay that was manufactured within a day of my original ECM 555 for my old 5L. but for a 5.7 (to match my new 5.7L long lock). I pugged it in and i get 32F, (it's 80F outside) and LOST ENG COMM at the dash tach read out.... and there's a black square relay that won't stop buzzing behind the ECM. I'm losing hope !

Request a refund from the seller. If seller doesn't budge or has a no return policy. Open a claim with PayPal that the seller sold you a not working(not as advertised ecm). PayPal will take care of you ans sides with the buyer 99% of the time.

When you put the new long block in, did you move ALL the sensors from the 5L engine? Have you checked that the sensors on whatever engine the new ecm is from match the sensors you have from the 5.0L?

It sounds like any ecm you are putting on is missing a sensor input and that may be why it's shutting down. Do you have the Rinda diagnostic software program? That would be a great source of diagnostic information.

All great suggestions ! The non-communicating ECM is getting checked tomorrow with a Merc scanning tool and I do believe the sensors that my other ECM - (the 2013 one that runs for 5 secs and shuts down) is looking for 2013 sensors that weren't there in 2005 ! I will hunt down the Rinda software program and look into that.. thx again...will update soon !

Double check what sensors are on the 5.7 vs the 5.0 too. I remember seeing a diagram for engines and the 5.0 didn't have the knock sensor but the 5.7 version did. Not saying it was your type but maybe there are more differences than just ECM for 5.0/5.7 and bravo/alpha.

So are you trying to use a 2005 ecm with 2013 electronics or the original electronics transfered over to the new engine?

I have replaced the 2005 engine block with a 2014 LONG BLOCK only. Most other electronics from the original 5L were put back on, or replaced with new, but same, compatible part number.

That's the wrong serial no. you entered. It's 0W068236 - does that have a different part no. ?
