1974 Evinrude 40 HP impeller change model 40455S

so, I pulled the drive shaft out of the lower unit to change the impeller, and now I can't get the shaft to go back down into the pinion gear. any suggestions?

Try putting the l/u in different positions while trying to put the d/s in.

The pinion gear is captive in that lower unit, and there is no reason the shaft shouldn't just slide right in. Maybe the splines aren't aligning. Rotate it a bit while sliding it in. Or if all else fails, put it in gear to hold the pinion from rotating while you rotate the shaft in.
