Today I picked up a 1977 Evinrude 75hp (electric shift-ugh!) for $200

Motor was bought brand new by the seller's dad....he ran it for a couple seasons then broke his transom and the motor has been in storage since 1985! The motor was winterized, and his dad oiled it yearly since then.

Model# 75743s

I didn't want an electric shift, but I couldn't pass up this deal(i hope).

I've only given it a quick look, but everything on the outside of it looks great. Coils are in fantastic shape at least.

The motor came with a couple of metal 6 gallon OMC gas tanks, hydrofoil, and controls.

Will have pics shortly.

Model #75743S is indeed a 1977 75hp Evinrude BUT it is not electric shift! The Hydro Electric Shift models existed only from 1968 to 1972.

maybe someone managed to put an electric shift gearcase on it somehow??? or put a 77 head on a 60s model body?? go figure that. are you sure that is an electric shift motor?? or maybe he gave you the wrong controls???

Update: It is indeed NOT an electric shift!!! :D:D:D I looked at the controls and saw only one handle and assuming it was electric shift. The handle had a red button under it that you press. I guess u press the red button and push the handle forward for forward....and back for reverse.

Before I can try and turn the motor over to check compression...I need to figure out what post on the solenoid to attach the battery lead. I'm assuming it attaches to the bottom post cause the red lead from the starter is on the top post, but want to be sure.

I tore right into the motor tonight. Took off the airbox(had tons of bug debris), but the carbs look fantastic! They look shiny and new. I can see that the fogging oil worked. I took off all 3 carbs(as a unit) and pulled the bottom bowl. Lots of fogging oil in there too, so everything looked great. I'm going to give them all a good cleaning, though.

I need to drop the Lu also....do I disconnect the linkage at the powerhead?

Remove the shift rod bolt under the lower carb from the port side.......its #69 in the BRP "cylinder and crankcase" exploded view......

Anyone know if the 1976 service manual is the same as the 1977 manual. Only a couple of the '77 manuals on ebay($40) and there are a few '76 manuals for only $20.

I am not sure on the manual, but you are correct about the positive terminal. when you do compression check, also do a spark check with a spark gap tester (available at most auto parts stores). I would clean those carbs good. that looks like a great motor.

Don't take this as gospel, but for the 70 HP the more notable changes in the motor came after 1978. It seems that most of the parts I am looking for for my motor are usually compatible with 1973-1978. Same may be the case for your motor. Go online and do a parts comparison. It may be that the 76 and 77 models are essentially the same.

For your purposes, the '76 manual will do...

Update;

I squirted some 2-cycle oil in the cylinders and did a compression test. I got 150psi on all 3 holes! :D

I made some new base gaskets for the carb bases and reattached the carbs.

Dropped the lower unit and found that the impeller is still new looking and supple. (ordered a new one anyway)

Good spark on all 3 holes....I also changed the plugs.

hooked her up to a battery and she runs!:D:D:D

I think I've still got some bugs in the plumbing cause a bunch came flowing out of the lower unit while it was idling.
Water flow out of the exhaust relief holes on the top of the leg is sometimes droplets and then other times comes out in more of short bursts of a higher volume of water.

sounds like you have a motor that should last you a long time if you take care of it. congrats

Funny story, I found a crap load of foam bits in the airbox when I opened it up yesterday. Now I've realized that mice took every last minute scrap of foam out of my cowling. It's so bare that only dried glue remains on the inside of the cowling.

Fortunately, the fogging oil seemed to prevent them from trying to enter the carb throats.

Got a lot done today. Pulled the LU again to make sure it was free of bugs and debris. Lubed all zerc fittings and anything else that could be lubed.
I tightened all connections etc. only to end up taking everything off because I decided to bolt the motor on my boat.

Huge pain in the butt removing my 80horse and then bolting my 75hp on. Got the motor bolted on, only to find out that I should have run the steering ram into the tube BEFORE fastening the motor to the transom. Had to unbolt the entire motor and swivel it so I could get the ram in the tube.

I ordered a new impeller and a service manual today. Gonna have to fly a bit blind til the manual gets here.

I need some help with 2 things:

Timer base- what can I use to lubricate it?

"Power Pilot" control- I cannot figure out how they work. they have 2 cables that enter the motor...one is an idle lever....and the other is the throttle/shift cable.
i have no idea how one cable can control throttle and shift into forward/reverse on a manual shift engine.

I would use white lithium grease with teflon for the timer base.....we have a product here called zenox available in a spray can which resists heat, moisture and corrosion.....no doubt there will be a similar version there named something different.

Not quite.....i have the later model main lever plus fast idle lever controls but i think they both work in the same way.....one cable for throttle/fast idle and the other for gear selection. On mine if you have the fast idle lever raised (throttle/cold start) the main lever is not able to be moved from neutral until its lowered.

The main lever operates both cables (throttle/gear selection).....synchronised inside the control box.

Clean the timer base, the nylon retaining ring, and the top bearing surface of the powerhead. Use a small amount of nay brand Anti Corrosive Grease on the brass bearing surface of the timer base and the related surface of the top powerhead bearing surface. Use only oil on the nylon retaining ring.... DO NOT use grease on that nylon ring as that collects dirt whihc results in binding.

One cable does not control both the throttle and shifting. One is throttle, the other shift. The inner workings of the control box allows the idle warm up lever to advance the throttle slightly as well as the main control lever. If you don't have a service manual specificly for that engine, and you intend to keep it awhile, it would be a good idea to get one so that you understand its workings.

What is "anti corrosive grease". What store would likely carry it? Do I need to take the flywheel off to lube the timer base?

I've already ordered a service manual, it should be here in the next 48hours.

Got the motor buttoned up on the boat and installed a telltale today. As you can see by the pee stream, the impeller is still very strong. i used a small 1/4" flared tube as the outlet thru the lower cowling. I like it better than the OMC bulkhead fitting.

Gonna splash the boat tomorrow and see how she runs on the water.

Update:

Splashed the boat today to test the motor. As soon as we launched and the started the motor, water was coming out of the cowling! Pulled the cowling to find that the telltale hose got into the flywheel and was cut open.

I cut the tell tale hose and stuck a screw in the end of the hose and clamped it off, so we could continue our ride.

Motor idled nice and shifted into forward/reverse very well. Motor is def too low in the water. Cav plate is underwater a bit at WOT. Cav plate is even(maybe 1/2" lower) with the keel. Gonna bump the motor up 2 holes and run it again on the water.

The motor 'missed' a couple times when we first started out(maybe the water in the cowling caused it). Holeshot was MUCH better than my old 80horse gave me. Bow jumped right out of the water and we got up on plane very quickly.

Motor sounds great, but I suspect my RPMs can go up a good chunk more. I've haven't been around outboards long enough to make an educated guess, but I'm going to speculate that the motor is spinning at 5k at WOT. No tach yet(I'm ordering one tomorrow). The vid makes the motor sound louder than it really is, so it'll be hard to judge ballpark RPM in the vid.
Going to check spark again(while on muffs), to double check that I'm getting great spark on all 3 holes.

I'm not too familiar with the "Power Pilot" controls, but it seem like I have to push the throttle forward quite a bit before the motor starts to respond to the controls. is this normal for the Power Pilot controls?

When you get familiar with the control cables & the link & sync procedure you will be able to get that slack out of the throttle no problem,

Nice motor! may I suggest a turning Point hustler 17p aluminum and maybe someday the boyesen dual stage reeds #133, the reeds made my 1975 70hp fool proof at loading time and she trolls like a dream, I also gained 150 rpm with my old non cupped prop, the turning point took some RPM away but I gained top end speed.
