Crab Bait got me thinking about matching the "splatter paint" black on white finish in my gheenoe on a customizing project I am doing, and even said I should look for a "marblizing kit" at Lowes. They don't have it, and neither does Walmart. The finish looks more like thin "drizzles" of paint instead of "marble veins". I even saw them spray this at the Custom Gheenoe factory. Anybody ever match this without a spray gun? I know a lot of boat companies use this finish on the interior surfaces of their boats.
Thanks.

Re: Splatter Paint Finish

Webbing....

You'll need a small amount of gelcoat in the color you wish to splatter, a bit of acetone or styrene for both cleaning the surface before you splatter and for thinning, some webbing solution (the important stuff), and a few throw away paint brushes...

You wet the brush then just kind of use the brush to "throw" the webbing "strings".. The brush never actually touches the surface your working on.. Some people use a broom handle in one hand to tap the brush against.. Messy job, but fun... :D Works pretty good for getting a factory look, but practice on some scrap wood or something first to get the hang of it.. A little practice will also help to figure out the amount of catalyst needed for the gelcoat...

Give these folks a holler.. They have everything you need and they're good people who'll gladly answer any qusetions for ya.. http://www.glueproductsplus.com/

Good luck on matching...I doubt you can match it. Call American Canoe on Allen Hill Ave in Melbourne. I spoke with Chuck, the owner, about this subect a few months ago. His boats have the splash finish and he may give you some expert advice. I'm taking a project interior to him to do the splash finish.

BillP

Re: Splatter Paint Finish

Thanks to everyone for the replies. "Webbing" here is the key word. That's what the small can (4 oz.) was in the marblizing kit from Krylon. It took a he!! of a lot of research, but not only does Krylon still make it, you can still buy it. Couldn't find it in any of the retailers listed at the Krylon website, but did find it on a crafter's website. Must buy in 3 can multiples, but at $2.50/can, I bought six. I'll post the website tomorrow from work, don't remember it right now. Can't wait to play with it.

Glass newbie thank you. That is what I needed to know. I was wondering how they did that now I can fix my insides the same as the factory. (Maybe not the factory was Bayliner. :) )

Less is definitely more in this case. That was 3 "taps" on the spray button, turning the piece 45 degrees after each one. One can will probably cover the entire interior of my Gheenoe, and I have 6 cans!!

Re: Splatter Paint Finish

Sorry for the late reply. That's Krylon flat white paint over white tinted polyester resin, then the Krylon webbing paint. I would have liked to just "splatter" over the resin, but I don't think there are any UV protectors in it and I'm sure it would break down in a year or two.
