I have an 83 bass tracker and the transom wood is rotted and needs to be replaced but would cost more to do then the boat is worth. would placing a sheet of metal/aluminum in the inside and on the back of the boat between the motor mounts hold and support a 35 or 40hp motor

Re: Rotted transom reinforcement

Welcome aboard, JCB.

Simply stated, the answer is no. Is it an aluminum or a glass tracker?

What you mean is it would not be cost effective to have the transom replaced by a professional, you however could do it for much less and that would be worth it.

A sheet of 3/4" plywood=$40
A quart of epoxy resin=$30

If you think your boat is worth less than $70 I'll buy it from you depending on your location.

Band aid repairs on any transom really is not a good idea :( Transom repairs on any aluminum hull are easy, fast and effective. Moving to the restoration section.

I seriously doubt a qt would do the job if one plans on sealing the wood before installing - maybe. Dilute the epoxy with 5% acetone for the first coat then full strength for second coat. Before installing be sure to pre-drill all holes and coat with epoxy before installing. Will last a life-time. JM2?s .

Here's another vote agreeing what everyone has said. NO !!!!!!!!!!!! Putting a band-aid on a bad transom is not safe.

As others have pointed out it's not rocket science to do the repairs yourself. As far as a source of supplies I use fiberglass and epoxy from US Composites. Their epoxy is the best price I've seen, and it's plenty good enough for the job.

Got any pix? Pix would help us to give better advice. Tin boat transoms are cake compared to glassers, but depending on how it's constructed some are easier than others.

From this distance, it looks like an easy fix...Remove engine, drill out a bunch of rivets, expose the rotten transom, remove, make a new transom, coat with some epoxy and paint, install new transom and re-rivet the pieces you took off to get to it, re-install engine...

The tin pros will be along to guide you through this...

Have Fun!
