Has anyone had experience with Ultra tuff vs Kiwi products? I used a two part expoxy a couple of years ago but stains have penetrated it. Now I have a soft section that I need to replace and I don't wish to use the same paint.
Anybody had experience with these products or any advice?

Thanks

Re: deck coating

Hey,

I used 3/4 exterior ply, coated the underside with 1 coat of west epoxy system, coated the edges with 5200, the seams I used fiberglass mat, and then I coated the entire deck with 3 coats west epoxy.. I sanded and scuffed with 220 grit, and the applied 2 coats of kiwi grip.. I really liked the end product.. The tread is not aggresive on bare feet, and really seems to hold up well.. I used zinc chromate to coat any metal areas before applying kiwi grip.. I was surprised on how durrable it seems..

Of course it has only been a short while, I guess the test of time will only tell, but as for now I am really happy with it..

I will say this though, if you order the gray, it is really not gray, it almost looks white...

I don't have a any pics on this computer to post but you can look on my project "Bluefin sportsman resto in progress", I have some pics there of how it looks...

Re: deck coating

Thanks. I was looking at grey as apposed to the white. BTW. when I had to replace a starboard section of deck I had to use 1/2" ply. Way back some yahoo had to replace the section that I am replacing now but he layed a 3/4" over the existing deck and now I am having to rip the that out before I can see what actually needs to be done.
So you like the Kiwi.
Thanks

Is this an aluminum or fiberglass boat?

Re: deck coating

It's fiberglass- 83 20' Grady V6 95 Yama. My Baby. I believe it was saltwater therefore repowered with exsisting motor. Runs like a terror. 2 inboard 40gal tanks. The port side had a makeshift repair on the deck around the seat which was solid when I did the starboard deck repair which turned out real good. My problem is the paint which I got from Rotdoctor, a 2 part paint which has stained to the point that I can not get it removed. They replaced the paint but no good. I noticed that they have discontinued that paint. I'm trying to find something that will work for me.
I imagine that I'll have sand all the exsisting deck, but I don't know. Sure could use some help.

Pictures speak 1000 words, so if you have any post them, there are many people on here with wiked good knowledge of all types of boat repair and maint... These forums are an invaluable resource to any taking on a boat project... Sometimes its just easier too see rather than read whats wrong....

Sounds to me that the previous owner tried to cover up a deeper problem and maybe just get one more year out of it... Not sure though but post some pics...

Re: deck coating

I used the Cabela's Tuff Coat in Gray. So far my experience is it is extremely Tuff and doesn't feel too bad under bare feet. It does collect dirt fairly easy but it also washes up pretty good and holds up to scrubbing.
Before I put the Tuff coat on I coated both sides of my plywood with two coats of epoxy, then two coats of primer on the top, then four coats of the Tuff coat.

Re: deck coating

Don't wish to be rude or to put anybody off but my original question was has anyone had experience with ultra tuff vs Kiwi deck paint. I had a problem with uniflex 225 from Rotdoctor and I trying to find my best solution.

Re: deck coating

I just kinda wanted to see what you had going on there..

I personally never used those products .. just epoxy with/without glass or poly and glass.

Mini bump for others.

Re: deck coating

You stated you had a problem with the Rot Doctor product but did not give any details. With any paint system the key to success is the substrate prep. What did you do to prep the deck for painting? You will need to remove as much of the failed product as possible, prep the deck appropriately, and then I would think any two part epoxy paint, applied using the mfg's recommendations you should have good results. If you remove all of the Old paint, you could even Gelcoat the deck.

Right here Woody ;) ..

Before I put the Tuff coat on I coated both sides of my plywood with two coats of epoxy, then two coats of primer on the top, then four coats of the Tuff coat.

So what kind of a deck paint would you recommend

thanks

What you already put on :D ..

But I only work in Industrial applications .. so Awl grip or Gel is what I would be mandated to use.

It looks good .. lets see how well its holds. You did everything right as far as coatings IMO ..

YD.

PS. Thanks for the pics :)
