I've been looking for a boat to tinker on ever since enjoying helping ChadSCI with his. I mentioned this to Jes's (my wife) dad, Jerry, and he said I could just have his. I remember driving it around several years ago. I think I was the last to use it, and the first to use it in quite some time. Since I drove it, it got a new floor, and bounced around to at least one other owner. It's a late 70's Chrysler Sport Satellite with a tri-hull and 75hp outboard. I love the retroness of the boat. I'm not sure how "cool" it is to boat folks, but it has great nostalgia factor as my wife remembers being a little girl on it.

As far as I know, the drive itself has really low hours. It doesn't need a ton of work to get it going. I should be able to toss a battery in, throw the tank in, and go. Cosmetically however theres a bunch of work to do. I need to get the gel coat compounded and glazed, and I need the front seats reupholstered, and the side panel reupholstered due to mice. I really hope I dont run into any wiring issues along the way from that. Here are a few photos. to start off the "build".

I got some rubbing compound and a ****ty low speed buffer and tried to clean it up a bit the other day.... I also vacuumed it out and wiped it down quite a bit. I also had to pull out the steering cable as this one was bound up in the position the outboard was in. I did get it free, but it was sticky on one end. The boat looks significantly better, but I think someone with a high speed buffer might be able to do a better job.

this is also super crappy to have to deal with:

coulda had it out on the water if it wasnt for this (other than the license)

Im heading out to get a new cable maybe tomorrow. I also found a soft spot in the floor on the bow. its small, so it shouldnt be too difficult to replace.

Does anyone else have one of these? or some info/photos of them? There seems to be very little information about them on the web. Were they popular but ended up being throwaways once they got ratty?

I hope to share with you guys more as time goes on!

No spark :( ****. The boat has had mice in it, so I have no ****ing clue what to do. Will start with all the grounds, and the ignition switch. I hope I dont have to clean the points. I imagine in my head those would be fine since it ran last time it was parked.

Also, whoever painted all this **** and didnt leave a spot on the motor to ground the spark plug should be shot.

Finally a Chrysler boat with a Chrysler motor on it! Cool project. Post your motor questions in the Chryser/Force section. Some real gurus in there.

I'm not sure I am comforted by that statement ;) however I like to keep things original :) and....I yellow bellied and dropped it off at the local marine guy today. I just dont feel like doing the points and all that baloney :/

Really cool boat. At one time Chrysler made some cool products. I am the proud owner of a 68 Plymouth Satellite and a fan of chrysler product from the 60s and 70s so the name caught my interest. I did not know they used the Satellite Name on boats. Good luck with your project.

still no spark. brought the boat over by the garage and started diagnosing. decided it was probably the CD box. Hate just throwing parts at it but I might as well give it a shot.

tried throwing an MSD 6A on there, didn't seem to work.

Re: 197X Chrysler sport satellite restoration

thanks guys :)

really thought the manual would be more helpful. it isnt. diagrams are great but the idiotic book says to get a CD tester special part blah blah blah.

how hard is it for someone to write up a wiring diagram for that kind of swap? It seems like from reading that the 6a should work..... wonder why it didnt work for me. I must have had it hooked up incorrectly. I had the "signal" wire going to the distritubot where the white/black wire used to be.

ugh

Digital K and j3hill, great pics of your boats! I've got a Sport Satellite that is as old as I am. It belonged to my uncle until he died about 6-7 years ago, then was handed down to another family member until it wound up in my possession. I love to see other years of the SS. Its a very unique boat, one you dont see much about online. My uncle was the original owner and took pristine care of it. I am doing my best to do the same. It is in need of a new ignition switch and the local boat shop here is pretty helpful so it should work out.
