I have a 40 gallon cell that is under the console and I want to put something between it and the sole of the boat for padding. A local gasket supplier says to use a Nitrile PVC closed cell sponge material. Ideally there will never be gas on it but I guess just in case it would be good to have something that does not melt when subject to it. Would I/O carpet work? What is typically used?

i would rather have something that melted, so i know i have a leak, than something that absorbed it and became a bomb. ask tank mfgr.

My boat's fuel tank sits between the stringers under the deck, the tank sits on rubber vibration pads that are about 4"x4" square and about 3/4" thick, they were glued to the bottom 4 corners and one right in the middle of the 30 gal. aluminum tank.

I do not think you need any kind of padding. As long as the floor is smooth and sound, it should be fine. You might use some kind of flexible hold downs, however.
