My mercruiser 488 1983 has been eating the zincs right off it about every month. I store the boat on a moring and use it about everyday in the summer for about 3 months. I didnt know it this was normal?

Re: zincs

Hi, Sacrificial Zincs are designed to corrode due to electrolosis. If they are corroding at a rapid rate, which it sounds like. This indicates an electric current in or around the boat. Start checking bonding wires, grounding wires, and cable connections. Sometimes even a small problem can cause a zinc to erode quickly. If there are boats near yours, check with the owner and see if he is experiencing the same problem. If he is, it could be something in the water. If not, it could be isolated to your boat. I had a guy with similar problem, after checking everything on his boat, he asked the guys on each side at his dock. They were having the same problem. They later found a shore power wire under the dock with a slice in the insulation. Repaired the wire and the problem went away. Sometimes it not easy to find.

Re: zincs

Sounds like you are lucky and have replaced the anodes to keep the alternative from happening, decay of working parts. Measure the voltage from your motor case relative to the safety ground on your AC at your mooring. I don't know where you are moored or if you have a charger or other defective electrical device on board.
