I am mostly a freshwater fisherman and I like to watch fishing on TV, especially in the late winter when piscatoriosis (fishing fever) is at it's peak.

Most fishing shows irritate me with their endless infomercial tone and "star" promotion.

My favorite is "Spanish Fly", even though it is a saltwater fishing show. It is laid back. :) Jose speaks english and doesn't load us up with redneck slang. The music is usually pleasant and in the background. He clearly has fun. Advertizing is kept in the commercials.

Next would be "In Fisherman". But, too much advertizing in the meat of the show, too much talking heads.

I like about 10 minutes of "Simply Fishing". But it is an infomercial for Mehsikomer's other enterprizes and sponsors. He doesn't seem to know how to use any lure but a Giant Jackpot and is too impressed with his own importance.

Most of the others I have seen overdo the "good ole boy" act to the point of parody, slaughter the language and never seem to get out of the product promotion mode.

What are your favorites, and why?

Jimmy Houston Outdoors "and guest Joe Hall head out to go crappie fishing in the brush piles on Lake Ray Roberts in North Texas. Later, Jimmy and his wife, Chris, angle for bass in east Texas".
I think like most I can block the adverts, and get into the sernery, challange and sport, and taste.
Or Hank Parker...... fishing up north, the bass seem to be alot darker, but just as fisty (Minn:), who ever said the north don't have bass?!

Re: Your favorite TV fishing show, and why?

Hi there JB. Down here my friends have noticed a pattern with the local TV fishing shows.
They generally all started out with the simple things all fishermen like to know/learn, like where and how to catch bait fish, how best to fish from a wharf/pier, catching fish from a dinghy.
Sooner or later as they get sponsership the topics change to fishing from expensive boats and fishing overseas/exotic areas.
Then they get really upmarket with the usual season finales of a few weeks showing where they went for their sponsered overseas trips vidoes.
The usual diatribe of vidoes is spewed forth and the TV program is shut up for the rest of the year.
We just keep on fishing in the hope that each year we keep meeting at each others house and keep fishing.
When I see overseas fishing programs I watch because they are so different.
And yes I have been filmed for TV fishing programs, none of which were shown here in NZ. One was on fly fishing for saltwater mullet. The other was catching snapper during the previous America Cup when everybody else was watching the races.
Ross

Re: Your favorite TV fishing show, and why?

I have two that I TRY to catch but it seems I always miss them or just catch the tail end of them...

Spanish Fly... Like JB says, Very laid back... My kind of fishing.. :) (I especialy like the flaminco guitar music)

Walkers Cay Chronicals... Its been TV on for quite a long time and it still holds up very well.. A bit of variety as of late.. Some freshwater, some saltwater... Also very relaxing and laid back... Not a 30 minute commercial... Flip Pallot is the real deal..

Hard to say which one of these is my favorite because they are both great shows...

Now, I must confess.... I do enjoy Bill Dance when I need a laugh because he is so animated... I especially like the Blooper shows he does every so often because I can relate, as I am a clumbsy fisherman who's ended up in the "drink" once or twice..

PS... Anyone know what happened to Orlando Wilson?.. Have not seen or heard anything about him or his show in quite a while...

For me it's Hank Parker.
He has fished one of the lakes I go to some,(Lake Barkley, and Kentucky Lake) and he is almost the best down home kinda guy there is.
I like what he does with the Kids Korner segment also.

I really enjoy all those mentioned. Best line I remember was from Hank Parker. He had hooked a huge largemouth and while playing him in, he commented something along the lines of "Man, this is really got my heart beating" kinda like it wasn't beating before. Plus I love the opening to Hank's show where the fish jumps right into the bear's mouth.

I don't have cable (never have), so I can't comment on the current stuff.

I will say, as a kid, "American Sportsman", held my attention, like no other show at the time (which wasn't saying much in the early 70's). A mid-western farm boy, watching someone fight a 400 pound Marlin, leaves for a lot of imagination.

Since that time, I have always said, "someday I'm going to fight a fish that big". Fantasy became reality last summer, as I landed a 186Lb Blue, off the coast of Mexico.

Maybe I need a dish installed to get me ready for the next big fishing adventure :)

Haven't had cable in 10 years, too busy actually catching fish instead of armchair fishing. I imagine there are some good shows out there but...

I like to watch the Best of Bill Dance, I especially like to watch the out-takes when he messes up, he falls alot, especially out of boats.

Re: Your favorite TV fishing show, and why?

I'm with NathanY, Bill Dance is a good show when I can catch it. I really like to watch the Bass Master tourneys until they got into racing there rigs. I wish someone would tell me just what does racing a boat have to do with fishin'. Oh well, got Bill Dance to fall back on. Hey Nathan, did you ever see that video he made of nothin' but out-takes? It's really a gas. :D

you're kiddin right? i gotta 3 yr old... nuff said

when the tv is on, its cartoons. since i usually fix up breakfast on the weekends, i do catch outdoors channels with Bill, Roland & InFisherman sometimes. they all have their moments of usable info. mostly commercials though. when i really want info, i get the videos of local pros, and InFisherman. never get to watch it all, daughter is up early too. ;) Bill Dance's bloopers are great though.

Know what ya' mean ebb. The daughter gets here with the three grandsons and it's straight to the DVD rack. Say good by to the tube for a while. But that's OK. Gives me a good reason to go out to the shop and tinker! :D :D

Re: Your favorite TV fishing show, and why?

You have to solve that problem the way I did.
I had 3 girls in the house all at the same time some years back :D and I could never get on the tv.
I got one for the computer room and dared either one of them to touch it.
Then I had to get one for each one of their rooms cause they were always fighting over who was gona watch what.
It never ends when you have girls.
I don't even want to talk about proms. :)

Re: Your favorite TV fishing show, and why?

Recently I try not to miss Fly Fish TV But that has to do with my mose recent addiction in the world of fishing. I usually try to look at show content and watch the ones that intrest me and not watch anything that does not. For example Bill Dance when he is catfishing or panfishing and others with simmilar or S/W inshore content.

I like Bill Dance. It is a show I can learn from since I never had anyone around to teach me.

I like Ronnie Kovaks because he drives my wife crazy.

I like Hank Parker

I sometimes watch Joe Bucher although he is a little commercial, but he fishes near where I go.

I saw Walker's Kay Chronicles once, but haven't seen it on around here.

You guys get alot of good fishn shows that
we don't get to see out here in the sticks.
Not to many fishing shows worth watching out this
way except Infisherman and maybe Bob Izumi.I like
to watch the saltwater shows when ever I get a
chance. Don't get to see them very often though.
