The following is on the Highway info site for California:<br /><br />US 395 IS CLOSED FROM 13 MI NORTH OF BISHOP (INYO CO) TO BRIDGEPORT (MONO CO) - DUE TO AN AVALANCHE - MOTORISTS ARE ADVISED TO USE AN ALTERNATE ROUTE <br /><br />We leave for a mini-week at Mammoth at O-dark thirty in the morning. They got seven feet overnight. Condo booked, snowmobiles reserved, lift tickets paid for. Wish us luck. You literally cannot get to the town of Mammoth Lakes tonight without a Helicopter and the wind is blowin' too hard for those . . . Rumors range from traffic is already moving to they won't get it open until Wednesday.

That's a shame QC. Reminds me of a trip up the Sherwin grade back in '78 or '79. I was driving my trusty '64 Ford Galaxie wagon with an equa-lok rear end. It was snowing so hard that the road signs were obliterated.<br /><br />I kept up a relenting drive to the goal of Mammoth. ( a quest similar to yours) Before I knew it I had a whole line of cars locked in behind me. They were afraid to venture forth by themselves.<br /><br />Well, we made it to Mammoth where the roads looked like a maze, with the snow piled so high and the roads just cut thru it. That nite they moved all of Mammoth's snow clearing equipment down to US 395 'cause they couldn't keep up with the snow.<br /><br />That was a very good nite, in the Condo's jacuzzi, with a bottle of Bailey's Irish Cream. It went down so smooth.<br /><br />Oh, how my head hurts as I recollect it all. Needless, I did not ski the next day.<br /><br />Hope you make it thru!<br /><br />ps, be sure to stop by Meadow Farms, on the northern outskirts of Bishop, and pick up a couple of pounds of Mahogany Smoked Bacon. A treat you won't forget.

It is looking a little better. Sherwin was one of the issues, but I think they may have that cleared, still scetchy. Thanks for the Bacon tip, Boomer!!

Well, that is not good, QC.<br /><br />Possible serendipidy: Maybe you will get into a "Can't get back from there" situation.<br /><br />Many years ago I was on a flight from Barber's Point to Guam, had all my diving gear aboard for a 2 day layover there. Lost an engine and got "stranded" on Kwajalein for 2 weeks. For snorkeling and SCUBA Kwaj is Bre'r Rabbit's briar patch.

Well we made it through with actually no real hassles other than being chained up for the last 30 miles. A friend who left 18 hours earlier beat me there by an hour <br /><br />This is a pic from one of the public parking areas after the first plowing:<br /><br />

<br /><br />Thanks for the well wishes . . . they cancelled the snowmobiles on us due to all of the snow, but we got great weather for skiing and a very nice end to the Holidays. Oh, we got some of the bacon Boomer, I'll let you know what we think.

I just cant handle th sun and snow combination,too much of the Irish, the coast is even worse. Lakes aint good but hel! you gotta make some sacrafices.

I know what you mean heycods. Sun and snow is absolutely blinding to me. I can't even go outside on mildly cloudy days without sunglasses. I used to get excruciating headaches daily before I realized it was from squinting all day. The headaches are gone now, and it's because it's a habit for me to wear my sunglasses outside. I always have sunglasses like a baby always has a pacifier.

yep me too. and dark enough you cant see through them, but its rough to read a menue in a dark resturant with them, and im to stuborn to carry 2 sets. oh well thats life sometimes not enough light sometimes to much.we hyjacking another thread.

Well, at least I'm not participating in hijacking my own this time! <br /> Edit: OK, this is really starting to anoy me. How come every time I post a smiley it never shows until after I edit the post and put in an extra space? Glad you made it QC. Oh what I'd give for some of that good dry Mammoth snow and the sunshine to enjoy it with. 'ceptin for storms, I used to ski there with an undershirt and wind jacket. Can't do that up here with the biting wet air. Hey, do they still wear bikinis in the spring? Northwesterners do not know what a bikini is. Actually, now that I think about it I'm glad they don't. <br /><br />On the bacon, it's thick and meaty. Cook it slow and turn it often. The delicious smell will pervade the kitchen. Yummmmmmmm!
