I have a 2004 50hp mercury elpto. Everything runs good on it no problems. I've had it four yrs now and fish every week. Last yr built on to my house ran it in may run treatment through every outing. This past month got it out first time and starting was difficult. I realized my tub wasn't big enough to fill water pump. She got kinda hot so took to lake. Give me trouble on cold start. I have no tach or anything. Got her running good worked fuel through but bogs down if I drop motor too low. Looked today 2 yellow wires from switch box to stator melted at bullet connectors. Don't believe stators bad, wires were burnt from outside sleeve in. I believe when she got hot it was touching engine and m elted wire tie through rubber sleeve. No tar on stator or any other wires. Don't believe it's a huge issue she ran for three days straight before I knew bout it. I believe my plugs have fouled why I have to raise motor to start. I don't wanna screw it up, got bullet connectors, sleeve and lube can I just redo that point or is there so.ething bigger. Thank you all for any suggestions.

Re: yellow stator wires melted

Before repairing the wire check the rectifier as a shorted rectifier will cause the engine to run poorly and burn the stator wires.

Hmm. Kinda hot? How hot is that? Did you smell the melting insulation?

Perhaps your head got so hot the touching wires melted them?

Almost every set of stator wires I have seen have what appear to be burnt wires. Not saying that they aren't bad but mine currently look burned yet they work great.

Yellow wires should be going from stator to the rectifier/regulator. Not the switchbox. I agree with Laddies.

this raises another question. When I start my boat its fine cause I start with motor level. If I drop motor all the way is when it wants to bog out. If I leave my motor level (judging off hood) then I can run it hard as I want long as I want with no trouble, skipping, nothing. That's why I thought plugs. Any answers welcome.

A tucked under engine runs rich, a tilted out lean, try adjusting the idle mixture
