Yellow Jackets

I made a great find a couple days ago. I was walking in the back yard and luckily I spotted a yellow jacket nest before they spotted me. And that was the great part about my find. I am all to familiar with those %$#@& things. I had a go around one day when I pushed a push mower over a nest. And they got instant revenge on me. Too many stings for me! Did I tell you how much a hate Yellow Jackets?

Well I found a nest in my back yard and thought, I have to get rid of these things now! So I assembled a 2 liter bottle trap and used some Dr. Pepper as liquid bait. And amazingly the next day I had a lots of them dead in the trap. But there are still tons of them flying around the trap yet. So I need to either sneak out there at dusk and use some serious gas in a tin can to put an end to them, or come up with some other way to end their existence. Anybody have any good ideas? :help:

My dad would go out on a cool night when the jackets were dormant and pour a gallon or so of varsol down the hole, then cap it with a Mason jar. The fumes and liquid would kill the critters quite effectively.

I have a YJ story where my entire side was yellow and being stung. Not to get into this story, if I see YJ's I go get a gas can and pour the whole thing down the hole, the hell with the EPA, those SOB are going down

Skunks or civilian napalm? A good use for E-Anything and no waiting for a skunk to find 'em. Flame On! LOL

I have done the mountain dew /dawn dish soap traps for years during the day, and Wasp and hornet spray at night to get the queen.

Wasp and hornet spray will melt certain plastics

Buddies dad did the gasoline thing once and thought he would light it. The ball of flame ignited the cedar tree near by and melted all the siding off the side of the house.

Oh the YJ stories I could tell. Let's just say they have worked me over more then once. I realize gas is the best. And I hear so many talk about lighting the gas after pouring it into the hole. But the fumes are what gets them, not necessarily the flames. But it seems so tempting to ignite them up if only for your personal revenge and feelings. I think some gas and a tin can on top will visit the nest soon. :D

Last Yellow Jacket nest I had in the back yard I strung the extension cord up there, hooked up my shop vacuum cleaner, laid the suction hose right near their hole, went back to shop and plugged it in....the sound of the vacuum running and the suction from the hose seemed to really attract and **** them off!.....anyway all the SOB's ended up in my shop vacuum after about 10 minutes and then I sprayed some carb cleaner in the suction hose to ensure their death.....seemed like a good, fun and safe way to take care of them!....

I just watched a Youtube video where a guy did basically the same thing. He had then in his house at the corner of the porch. Except he put water and dish soap in the shop vac and after about three hours, he didn't see anymore YJs. So he turned off the vac and opened it up. There must have been thousands in there ...all dead.

Carb Cleaner in the suction hose.

You were lucky - Carb cleaner is more explosive than gasoline. You could have had a flamethrower!

I don't light the gas, just pour in and let it do its thing

I just get a big boulder and plop it over the hole at dusk.
Me and them go way back. As a kid playing hide and seek outside, I dove on top of a nest. Every fall I get stung repeatedly. Luckily, I am not allergic and I just find the sting irritating. I share your hatred.

I was thinking, yea I know I shouldn't try doing that without proper equipment, but I was thinking that as dry as it has been, those YJs are probably thirsty. So this morning I gave them a good drink. No not water, I gave them a drink of 2-cycle fuel mixture in keeping with this boating site. They must have liked it, because I didn't hear any complaints. This morning it was 44 degrees, and there were none flying at that time, so I think my YJ problem could be fixed. :thumb:

Hey gm, Was that a non ethanol mix and was it a 50:1 mix or some other ratio. I'm asking in in case I ever end up battling Yellow Jackets. :flame::flame::flame:

I think it was a 40:1 mixture that I use for yard equipment. It was an ethanol gas as well (I hope that doesn't get into a non-ethanol fuel mixture debate ). It was the closest thing at that time, that I knew would work. So I used a Dr Pepper plastic 16 oz drink bottle of 40:1. I haven't heard any complaints. So I guess they liked it. :pound:

So, will the ethanol separate in the hole and actually provide the Jackets a non-lethal drink, or will it gum up the tunnels and make them impassable?

Actually I was hoping for the ethanol/gas blend to dissolve their wings because they were not made to use anything but regular non-ethanol fuels. You know how peculiar yellow jackets can be. Some won't work with anything but regular non-ethanol fuel. So the ethanol gas blend is going to be a real shock to their systems for sure.

Actually, I just checked in on them. Seems there are a few that have not had their chance to taste the fuel mixture because they are flying around trying to get into the hole where the Dr Pepper bottle is placed. So maybe anther night time drink is called for. :noidea:

I know for wasp you can use spray adhesive on them .. Their wings stick together and they hit the ground fast .. :joyous:
Pour some contact cement down the hole ..
