Hi Guys,

Just bought 4 motors, one is a 18hp M# FD-11, S# 1585856. 5 1/2hp M# CD-17, S# 2064208. 3hp M# JW17S, S# B67381. Also a Ted Williams 15hp, looks to be around a 70s vintage. Are there numbers somewhere on these to ID them, I also have a 7.5hp Ted Williams that I haven't been able to find #s on. Could someone please tell me where to find the the years, oil ratios, etc... on all of these? I bought them all for $325, also got a nice pressure tank and hose, did I get took? I didn't think so. The 18hp is in awesome condition, and the others are in find shape too. Thanks!

What in the world were you thinking??? :D

FD-11: 1957
CD-17: 1960
JW-17: 1961

All the Johnson's are 24:1 engines. Lots of info can be found on them at:
The Old OMC Site
The 18hp takes Champion J4C plugs, while the 3 and 5.5hp take Champion J6C plugs. Gaps are all .030". Lower unit oil is OMC/BRP 'HiVis', or alternative brands of 90 weight outboard gearcase oil for all three.

The Sears Ted Williams 7.5hp could have been made anytime in the '60s or '70s, so the fuel/oil ratio varies for it depending on which specific year. Here's some guides:
Sears 571 Prefix
Sears 574 Prefix
Sears 217 Prefix

Also, some of those engines are air-cooled rather than water cooled, so they take Chainsaw/Weedwacker two-stroke oil rather than TC-W3.

EDIT: I belive all 'Ted Williams' outboards were Eska built (217 Prefix). They used air-cooled Techumseh powerheads for their outboards.

Well, lemme see. . .

FD-11 is a 1957 18hp.
CD-17 is a 1960 5.5hp.
JW-17 is a 1961 3hp.

All use a 24:1 fuel mix, J4C spark plugs gapped at .030" and a point gap of .020"

Sorry, can't help you with the Sears engines.

Good luck. :)

Thanks Guys, thats a big help. Paul, did I make a bad choice or were you just kidding me? Oh, and I found out that the 15hp Ted Williams was a 1973.

In the last year, I've become the proud owner of an FD-11 also. It is the second outboard that I've worked on, and I must say, it's a pleasure to own. I love working on it, it's a lot of fun. I think you made a great choice, at least on that one.

My only problem with the 18 is that it's not a 30 ;)

Sorry, Paul. You out-typed me. :)

My Johnson book calls for J4Cs for the little hummers. I guess they do well with either. I would use the J4Cs for high speed running, J6Cs for trolling and low speed operation.
