My buddy's got a Merc 25HP and can't find the tag which states the year. The serial # is A135876. Not sure if anyone can help me out but all is appreciated. For some reason it's running on one of the two cylinders. no spark. Coil tested with a meter to be okay (and also swapped coils and cylinders to double check) so it must be something before the coil. I'm assuming either the "black box"..ignition module or before that, the stator and/or the trigger. I guess once i find out the year of the motor, i'll get the book to find out all the correct readings i should be seeing. If anyone has had a similar problem, please post. Thanks again.

unfortunatly I don't have a answer for you. However I would like to know what the stator windings have to do with the ignition system other than suppling it with power?

jersey you definately need a switchbox.....a trigger or stator will take out BOTH cyl on these motors.

Spotneck:
(and that is one interesting name you have) i'm not sure if the stator has any other purpose than to supply power to the ignition system. Maybe someone else could answer your question, but not with my technical expertise (slim to none)
ODDD1:
Thanks for the input. I'll have to give that a try if that box isn't too expensive. I just i knew the year of the motor! I just called a dealer and asked if i gave him a serial # to a motor if he could get me the year of it because i need to order some parts so..he asked me what the first letter was and then told me it was an early '80's. Then asked me if i needed anything else and i told him that i needed a swtchbox for an "early 80's" Merc 25hp. He responded that they're real busy right know with all 3 lines busy and that i should call back in a few hours or so. Noce, huh? O'well. Thanks again for your help.

Jersey, I am a dealer....an itreally cheeses me off that people like him are considered my peers. a serial number on a merc IS THE NUMBER you need to buy the correct peices.
your motor should be an '86 or '87.
there are only 2 switchboxes for those 25's ...ones with suds an nuts to attach the wires an ones with bullet connectors on the wires. get the right one an youll have your fire back..........i think [didnt look] part costs $150 or so...........
