Year of my Mariner?

I recently bought a mariner 20 Hp. motor, and cant find out the year on it.I tried a search on here, with no results.The serial #plate says"653 S11 612.Anybody have any ideas? Thanks a ton.

I had the same problem with my 20hp Mariner. What a coincidence! It's always easier to make sure you're getting the right parts when you know the year model. I went to a local merc/mariner service shop (not a dealer) and they were able to look it up on some sort of Mercury system they had. They were able to give me a printout w/ year model, place of original purchase, & original purchasers name. I assume this is some sort of product registration record, so I don't know if it's available on every motor since most people throw the registration card in the trash.<br /><br />------------------<br />Find the birds & you've found the fish!

I did find some info... in fuel section of my catalog... listing Serial Number Code "653" as Model 20A APE..<br /><br />"S11 612"... has to be different, maybe "S" is a "5" because nothing lists alpha in after 653-...... need to check out & maybe Walter or JB can help!<br /><br />fone_man

This is what I came up with on NGK site... I do not believe you have a year model!!! Just think it is a "653"... just kiddin', I am racking my brain here... so close but so far away... I did another search and found this site posted by a guy called bear.The site is swedish, but I found that it had Yamaha and japan mariner together.It shows serial letters for Japanese models.The "S" I think is a 1980 model. Hopefully that is it.A 1980 model.Now just got to get it running.It is very hard to pull.I havent got it cranked yet.Plugs are firing and great compression, but wont crank.I bought it at a yard sale for $100.00.I guess a hundred bucks ain't bad for 20 horsepower.
