Yesterday, I had the occasion to be at the stern of our boat, as my son has taken over the steering (and catching fish). I was surprised to see a sticker that, in addition to indicating the rating of the engine (BF50A) tells me that my motor was manufactured in 1995. I bought it in 2001!!!! This doesn’t seem right to me; that I would be sold an outboard made six years before the selling date. I actually expected a 2000 model, since we bought the engine in January, and the ’01 stock had not yet hit the floor where we live (Northern Vancouver Island).
The s/n is BAZL-1007996, model BF50A remote.

Alan L. in Port McNeill, BC

There was an older post that decoded the 1999 and newer models. It doesn't appear that your model number is in that 1999 and newer range...

Model Years:
AX = 1999
AY = 2000
A1 = 2001
A2 = 2002
A3 = 2003
A4 = 2004
A5 = 2005

Shaft Lengths
S = Short 15"
L = Long 20"
X = Extra Long 25"
XX = Extra Extra Long 30"
C following = Counter Rotation

Steering System
R = Remote Control
H = Tiller Handle

Tilt & Trim
T = Tilt & Trim
Blank = Manual Tilt
J = Jet
