I have purchased a Johnson 4hp Seahorse model number 4BR79D. It is a long shaft with no clutch. Can anyone tell me what year it was built?
Also I have a non-running seized 1983 Evinrude 4HP short shaft with clutch. Is it possible, using components from the Evinrude, to convert my Johnson to short shaft with clutch?
Thanks everyone....

Surprise , surprise its a 1979 model!

Re the second question

look at the parts diagrams for the two models and compare part numbers
find out which bits are the same for both models

BTW Wills Marine in Kingsbridge and Oakley Marine in Brighton good for spares
Google will find

www.ybw.com/forums for the best boating forums in the UK (iboats still best for outboard advice though)

Thanks Vic.
I agree that Wills Marine in Kingsbridge are excellent for help and parts.
Another question regarding the 4hp - where does the cooling water come out? My Johnson 7.5hp puts out a nice stream from under the cowling but I can't see this happening with the 4hp.

The cooling water leaves with the exhaust gases as is the case with almost all.
As far as I can see neither of the 4hps have a telltale but you'd expect a bit of water to be sprayed out (maybe no more than a fine mist) through the exhaust relief hole on the leg.

Thanks Vic - you are right - a fine mist comes out through the exhaust holes in the leg.
Best wishes PD
