Recently bought a 4hp Mercury outboard, Moder # 9090140. Any idea of the year, also the knob on the right side of the engine, is it a fuel shut off? Does the opening on the front nest to the choke, a hose connection for an externial tank.

Is that a 2-cylinder model?

If so, the knob on the side is the fuel shut off. Shut the fuel off before tilting it up or else it tends to leak gas out the carb from the tank.

The large hole is indeed for a seperate tank connector. But the fuel pump and connector was an option (no longer available).

The engine plate with the model # also says made in Belgium, will this make a differance on the year. Also it does have a fuel pump behind the remote plug.
(we'll try to keep this all in one post rather than starting new topics)

Not really, we already "knew" it was from there due to the model number being in the European 1976 range:
40 (4.0hp) 9075839-9141798 1976 2 cyl Gnat

So you've got the built in fuel pump for an external tank then? I look after one of these which my brother uses on his sailboat, and I've been keeping my eyes open for that pump. I'm envious. ;)

Outboard Non-repair.

What part of "not engine topics" did you miss?
