Year of 9.8 Merc. & how much gear lube?

I was given a 9.8 hp Merc. that I will use as a kicker.<br />The serial no. is, A178168. The cowling is black with gold trim if that helps.<br /> Can you tell me what year?<br />Also, how much gear oil does it take? When I went to change the oil, I could only<br /> get a few ounces in before the back pressure stopped me.<br />There doesn't appear to be a vent screw.<br />Thank you for any help.<br />Bud

There has to be a vent screw, otherwise you would never be able to fill it up, as it is already full of air.<br /><br />I don't have specifics for your motor but motors of that size hold about 6-8 ounces of oil.
