There is no way to tell what year or size motor you have from the numbers you give. Seems that you may have a Johnson ser# and what might be an Evinrude mod#. That model # how ever does not exist. It is true that type C gear oil is used in hydro/elect lower units. Is your motor 3 or 4 cylenders?

The serial number is found on a cover plug on the engine block. It should match the number that is on the braket plate. 60178c or is it 60173c? That would make it a 1971. The 60hp with hydro-electric drive was only made in 1970 and 71. Type C lub was speced, but has been superceded by Premium Blend.

Salute tomed01!
If that's a three rather than an eight, it's a 1971 Evinrude engine:
Evinrude 60173
Year: 1971
HP: 60
WOT RPMS: 5000
Displacement: 49.7 cu.in. = 814.4 ccm
Cylinders: 3
Weight: 207 lbs. = 93.9 Kg
Gear ratio: 12:29
Fuel/oil mix: 50:1 87 octane gas to TC-W3 rated outboard oil.
Spark plugs: Champion L76V Surface Gap or Champion QL77JC4 gapped at .030.
Lower unit oil: As indicated above, OMC/BRP 'Premium Blend' (Type C) gearcase lube only!
Picture
From the Old OMC Site.

I think you probably have a Johnson hood on your Evinrude engine. Happens all the time.
