Year and ? on 15hp Johnson

Just bought an aluminum boat for my grandson and his dad. It has 15hp Johnson model J15RCTR. Need to know the year and the pull rope handle dangles down so it may need a new spring but it does retract. Also has a nice little hole in the upper cowling that looks like it may need a rubber plug. It is on the port side. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Take the handle off the rope, pull it through back into the cowl. Wrap it around the starter as many times as it take to take up the slack , pull back through the cowl and reinstall the handle.

Thanks! I thought it was an older model but it looks fairly new. I will tighten up the rope.

You can also put some rags under the recoil and give it (the spring) a good shot of WD40 which will often clean and loosen the gummed up grease making the unit work much better. I've got an 82 15HP Evinrude and I think the world of it. Here is a link to a fantastic site which I think is a must read for 9.9 and 15 owners. Best of luck. Rick.
