Hi, new to iBoats forum, hoping someone can offer intel/knowledge about Yankee Fiberglass and the boats they made. This plate is all the identifying info I have from a 19’ down east style skiff from the 1980s. Did they make quality boats? Any info would be much appreciated, thanks.
(hopefully you can zoom in to read the plate)

That llate is of a style that suggests pre 1980s, as does the USCG MIC info:
MIC:NKE Status:Inactive
Company:YANKEE FIBERGLASS INC Company Official:,
Parent Company: Parent MIC:
Previous Company 1:FINESTKIND BOATS YANK
Previous Company 2:
Previous Company 3:
Previous Company 4:
Address:555 PLYMOUTH ST RFD City:MIDDLEBOROUGH
State:MA Zip:2346
Country: Phone:0
Fax: In Business:
Out of Business:5/17/1978 Date Modified:
Type:Outboards, Open Motorboats, Jon Boats Addtional Address:

Went out of business in 1978......

If it was a last year of production boat, its still over 40yrs old and how it was taken care of and most importantly how it was stored is significantly important about how 'good' a boat is now, rather then what it might have been like when new.....

Even the best quality, best craftsmanship boats succumb to the elements if rode hard and put up wet, left uncovered and outside....

:welcome: to iBoats . . .

The address on the MIC database for Yankee Fiberglass, Inc. is a residential address (looks like a 3 bedroom raised ranch :) ). So, probably a real small builder . . . probably had a shop somewhere. :noidea:

There was a time when 'backyard builders' would get an MIC code from the Coast Guard even though they made just a few boats.

Got any pictures of the boat to share?

Probably asking about quality of construction is irrelevant . . . who knows since there is virtually no information about the company or their boat(s) :noidea: , and after 40+ years, what would it matter ?

A lot of those small boat companies used chopper gun constructions to build boats quickly and cheaply. Actual hand-landed hulls were the premium versions and took way more time and labor to build. So most likely a chopper gun boat. Does that mean not a quality boat? Not sure. But most chopper gun boats were basically cheaply constructed for quick turn outs and not a lot of labor cost. So once you see how that boat is constructed, regardless of present condition, you can determine for yourself from there. And there were so many small boat builders that setup shop, made a few boats and closed soon afterwards. JMHO

Boat looks like production build. Hull is smooth and rock hard. The V front and flat stern looks a lot like some pics I’ve seen when digging online. I have a couple of pics.

remember, over the past 100 years, at least 100,000 boat builders have come and gone. a majority of them making only one or two boats. just in the 4 counties on the gulf near where I live have had over 10,000 boat builders alone.

it is not uncommon to find a boat with minimal information, especially a boat that went out of business 14 years prior to the internet existing. your best bet for information may be the local newspaper archives in the Middleburough MA library
