Well, Thanks to all the input I got from this board, I got my boat out for the first time this weekend. I still have a pretty chunky idle but I plan on doing a carb rebuild this weekend to cure that.

Here's the rub. I got out on the lake and after sufficent warm-up I slowly brought the motor up to WOT. It ran great for about 25 minutes! I then made a pretty sharp turn to port, and the engine almost died. I managed to keep it running, and it smoothed out a bit, but it startd to surge at WOT. I don't have a tach, but for example sake, let's say it surged between 4500 prm at WOT, and then bogged down to 3000 rpm, then back up to 4500, then down to 3000 etc. It continued this oscillation till I got it back to the trailer. It ran fine at about half throttle, and the idle was about the same as it has always been.

The bulb was full of fuel, no visible fuel leaks, full tank of gas. Correct oil mixture, BRand new plugs which looked fine after the run.

Could it be water in the tank? If so, how do I remove water from the fuel?

Thanks again!

------------------
Boat_Boy!

Re: Yammy 40 surging at WOT

Okay,

Last night, I pulled off the fuel filter to find a small pool of rust coloured crap in the bottom. Also a few chunks of stuff I am putting a second in-line cartridge in the line before the next run. Also, I will pull the pickup tube out of the tank and make sure it is clean.Could this be the problem?

I have the carbs off now, waiting for the rebuild kit to arrive. Any tricks to rebuilding the carbs I should know about?

Thanks for all you help for the newbies!

------------------
Boat_Boy!

Get the carbs off and clean them. Dissasemble them one at a time in a metal 9"X12" cake pan. Remove all the jets and the emulsion tube above the main jet, mixture screw, ect. Use a can of good spray carb cleaner with the little tube thingy. If needed to get any small orafices open enough to see through, you might need to probe through them with a small wire from a wire brush or similar, just don't go hogwild and change and orafice dimesions in the process. Spray that stuff through all the passageways and take note while doing it how well each passage flows, if you get to the other carb and see it's flowing different you better track down why.
