1992 Yamaha 9.9 2 stroke (ESHQ)
Picked this up this spring. Ran fine twice.
Currently it revs really high in neutral (screams). Pulling the choke half way settles it down enough to safely engage F or R. Once it is in gear, it behaves normal
Can a non mechanic like myself address this? Pretty busy next two weeks - not a great time for it to sit on a bench...

thanks in advance if you have any input

Welcome to Iboats,

When was the last time the carb was fully cleaned to an immaculate internal condition ? Does the throttle grip fully returns to the min slow side ?

Happy Boating

Not sure on carb - throttle does return to min....I was thinking carb, but that's not for me to address - might wait it out a week and get it looked at... Thanks !

2 things can affect RPM,
throttle linkage and timing,
a timing light will tell if the timing is too far advanced at idle

did you look at the throttle plates to make sure they are closing back to Idle position?
