Yamaya Waverunner Cooling System

Well, actually, I have a 1993 Boston Whaler Rage but it has a Yamaha Waverunner 650cc engine.

When hooked up to the garden hose, the engine runs strong. However, I launched this boat for the first time today (after spending the first two months overhauling the carb and replacing the motor mounts). I do not know if the engine is overheating as there does not seem to be a telltale (pee stream) as in outboards. I removed the cap from the garden hose flush adaptor and no water came out, some air did, while it was running.

So, my quesitons are:

1. Should water have come out of the garden hose flush adaptor?

2. If I can touch the cylinder for 5 seconds without getting a 3rd degree burn, is that okay?

3. How can I tell, otherwise, if the engine is overheating?

I searched the forum and saw a thread on PWC cooling systems, but I am still unsure how this system works.

Thanks.

I guess no one else is sure either ,at an idle you probably wont ger water to come out the flush hose and it may have a check valve but I doubt it at high speed see if water comes out and if you can place your hand on the engine its not running hot, also if the buzzer dosen't come on then you are probably ok

as far as how it works is simple, there is no water pump like a out board it gets its water from the jet pump a good thing to look for is when you flush it out see if water is coming out the pump if so the holes that feed it in to the engine are not obstructed,if water dosen't pour out the pump, there could be sand in the feed hose or weeds in it

Re: Yamaya Waverunner Cooling System

I studied my own boat and found my own answers. The hose from the impeller to the engine was disconnected and, had I run the boat any longer, would have cooked the engine.

1. While running the engine, I disconnected the water hose flush adaptor and hot water came out of the hose under pressure. So, this is one way to determine if the water is pumping properly.

2. Now that I know my engine is cooling properly, I can touch the cylinder for 5 seconds.

3. When it billows smoke and stops running. Unfortunately, I witnessed an outboard doing this.

Thansk for posting that info! I have the same boat with a Yamaha 700 upgrade. Just purchased it and am in the process of going over the engine to make sure all is well. I have zero experience with these boats and these motors, but I've already (as you have) answered a number of my own questions (electrics in particular). I know this is an older post, but may I contact you via PM to tap into your experiences if I have any questions?
