Looking for a little help with my 2002 yamaha f25msha four stroke. Was hunting this past weekend and on my way out of the marsh, hit something with my prop. Engine stalled and would not restart. After paddling a mile and a half and getting it home, i finally got the engine started after putting the shifter in drive and turning the prop by hand. The motor now runs, but something grinds a bit when putting in reverse. No grinding when it's in gear, but does when shifting. It's never done that before, so i'm thinking that something is out of alignment, bent, or busted in the lower unit. Also, when the engine is not running, I can shift fine between drive and neutral, but reverse is somehow locked out, can't get it to engage.

Thinking of draining the oil out of the lower end, checking for metal shavings, and pulling it apart to check the gears and shifter mechanism. I'm not too mechanically inclined, but have a couple friends who are car mechanics that are pretty good and willing to help. Just don't want to take it in and take a bath. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Re: yamaha won't go into reverse

before you get too far into it check your shift linkage adjustment, it may be off. if its not going all the way in gear you will hear the teeth hitting on the gears and it can sound like grinding. just to be sure disconnect the linkage rod and shift it by pushing up or down on it while you spin the prop by hand. if its going all the way into reverse then continue taking the lower unit off and see if you have a broken gear inside.

if adjusting the linkage solves the problem then replace the lower unit oil and replace it again after a few hours driving time and check for metal bits just to confirm all is ok.

Re: yamaha won't go into reverse

Thank you for the reply "limitout!" How do i adjust the shift linkage? Is it the hex and barrel nut that I see just above the lower unit, or is it under the cowling? I'm hoping to have time to mess with it tonight. Thanks again for your help with this!

New problem with Yamaha 25hp fourstroke

New problem with Yamaha 25hp fourstroke

New problem guys, I did take the boat in to a shop to get it checked out, they pulled the lower unit, checked the clutch dog, etc. Said everything looked OK. Have not had it in the water since I ran over something, which started these problems. So I took it out last week, only to find out it shifted fine between forward, reverse, and neutral. BUT in forward gear, the engine "bucks / jerks," sounds and feels exactly like i was running over something. Bucking and the clunk sound get louder as I accelerate. Happens only in forward gear, and only when i give it a little throttle. Reverse is just fine.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I'm now in the beginning of our hunting season and am so frustrated that i have engine problems. Need to get this one figured out THIS WEEk!

Thanks again for the advice!

Re: yamaha won't go into reverse

talk to the shop that took lower unit apart and inspected the gears and clutch dogs to see what they have to say as no one on here saw what everything inside looked like
