A friend called me to look at their Yamaha. There is water in the oil. What's first?
Thanks,
J

what oil has water in it?
PT&T oil, 2 stroke oil, or 4 stroke oil?

always best to give info of what motor you are talking about

If it the engine oil, is it a lot or just a trace. When I changed mine last fall there were a couple of streaks of faint white on the top of the dipstick. I put that down to condensation from the air. You want to be careful though, it could be serious.

Agreed I’d probably change the oil & put a sample of what came out in a clear container, let it sit & see if you find a layer of water on the bottom. Also look for a mayo appearing emulsion under the valve cover(s). Both are evidence of a lot of water in the oil. If not if it’s only a little then make sure the thermostat is not sticking open, cold running can cause the water vapor normally produced to not burn off. But if it’s a lot, causes could be a leaking head gasket (on these often caused by corrosion of the sealing surfaces on the block and/or heads) , a cracked head or a hole rotted thru a cyl head or block.

Yeah....I get it. I'm usually the one asking for serial number info. ugh...
I haven't been to the boat yet but I believe it is a 4-stroke and the oil sump contains a milkshake. The pictures are ugly.
My question comes from the idea that supposedly the compression tests good. Could this still be the head gasket?
Just looking for ideas before I approach it.
Thanks,
J

Yes I had 2 blown HGs water in the oil & normal compression test results.
