I have a 90 HP Yamaha, 1999, which I purchased about a year and a half ago. Runs great, I routinely change the lower oil, the plugs, the water filter and lubricate fittings, steering. Is there other things I should be doing?

How frequently should the impeller in the water pump be changed? Also, should the carbs be removed and cleaned as preventive maintenance or only if a problem develops?

Thanks for all the valuable info on this site.

Re: Yamaha Tune-up

i am wondering the same thing about the impellor. it works fine but I know I have sucked up sand and mud in the past? Should I change it? If not, when? Don't want to wait til I get stranded somewhere. ( 2001 30 yamaha ) thanks

Re: Yamaha Tune-up

Many boaters will change them every other year. The impellers are made of rubber and they will deteriorate and loose flexibility whether the engine is used or not. You have had the boat for a year and a half and unless you know for sure when the previous owner changed it, you are probably due in my book to replace it. If you go to the trouble of dropping the lower unit and removing the impeller you should replace it as they aren't that expensive and most of the trouble is in gaining access to the impeller. An added side benefit of changing them every other year is that it keeps the bolts that hold the lower unit on from getting frozen with corrosion. Some people will say if it ain't broke don't fix it but with overheating being one of the most common killers of outboards I recommend fixing them every couple of years as a matter of practice.
